Several standalone bookmark systems exist. For example, see http://download.cnet.com/windows/bookmark-managers/?&rpp=30&tag=dropDownForm;productListing;pop
The Opera bookmark system, while adequate for many people, including me, could have been enhanced in a number of ways.
A stand alone system could also bookmark local, non-html documents, like PDF and wordprocessing documents.
Does anyone have any knowledge and experience with any such systems?

You can bookmark local documents such as PDF using Opera's bookmarks.
file://localhost/O:/Documents/Websites/AIM/Assets/PDF/2013.pdf
or
file://localhost/O:/Documents/todo.txt
Text files will open in Opera, so will PDF files if the plugin is enabled. Other file types will show the Download dialogue from where you can open them in their associated program, e.g. 7-Zip or Word.
Type "opera:drives" in the URL field to navigate your local drives to find files to open directly from Opera.

If you can set up a LAMP/MAMP/WAMP server on your localhost or remote machine, Online Bookmarks is really nice.
LAMP/MAMP/WAMP??? See:
http://voices.yahoo.com/what-amp-lamp-mamp-wamp-servers-do-3416718.htmlSee the post about Online Bookmarks I made on 27. August 2013, 08:13:50 in the delightful Opera 15 is a DISASTER thread:

But if I'm not mistaken it'll "download" the file, not edit the original.

You're mistaken. The local file will be opened in the plugin for editing. Local HTML files or Text/INI files can be edited using the source editor.

Right, I don't use plugins.

It doesn't work for me. Could it be my ancient operating system (XP)?

Or if you have the QAB setup, AKA Bookmark Bar, you can click on the '+' button at the left of the bar or click on a folder on the QAB. When you click on a folder, the first menu option is "Add page", allowing you to add that bookmark page to the folder while maintaining a hierarchical bookmark system that suits your needs.

Since I have the Quick Access Bar set up though clicking on the + works well. I've notice one improvement in Opera 18, which I've just updated too. Now Items in folders on the Quick Access Bar can be deleted. That makes it easier to manage bookmarks in the bar. One can add items with the +, drag them to a folder on the quick access bar, and delete if necessary from there. As for trying Control D if I want to save a page, I did it that way, and the item was saved on my Quick Access Bar. So it seems to work the same as clicking on the + if you have the Quick Access Bar set up.

How do I open the Bookmark Bar?

That's only to search for the topic, which is what I did that led me here. Where is this QAB you keep talking about? And if really will hold thousands of bookmarks, in an easily accessible manner, then why the hell don't they just have bookmarks, like every browser does? This is so absurd and self-destructive, as it's only going to drive many who wish to use Opera, away....
