FF is certainly slow. I can testify to that. Couldn't the extension capability provide many if not most of the Opera functions not available in native XUL.

What then is the full Opera12 replacement? It doesn't look like the new Opera. A slow browser with ongoing support and security enhancements would be better than nothing.

The Opera user interface elements function with commands that are known and obvious. Anyone can see them in the various Opera ini files.

Why couldn't someone build a front end to Gecko using the Opera command set that would look and work like Opera and use everyone's existing ini files.

The Mozilla Foundation might support it. The idea might interest some of the people who worked on other Gecko browsers.

Using Opera 12.02, in preferences, downloads, I have set MIME type application/pdf to "show download dialog." When I open a link to a pdf document, I get a dialog box that says "downloading file" and a dropdown box that presents open with Adobe Acrobat and open with "Other application." When I click on "Other application," I get an open dialog box to find the other application.

Sometimes I would like to open pdf files with Foxit reader, and on other times I want to use Acrobat.

How can I add Foxit to the download application list? I assume the specification is somewhere in the .ini files, but I haven't found it.

when I move the focus down with the keyboard between the entry beginning "Libya Navy" and "Policemen among," the focus, the lines around the selected link, disappear. As I continue to key the down focus key, I continue to see, in the status bar, the addresses of articles but the screen does not move at all as I continue to key the down key.

Later in the document, the focus reappears again when I move it down from the link labeled "Why aren't big bank" to "Egypt gone bad." That link appears under the date January 03, 1024. The focus reappears and starts working again.

I observed this problem on this web site and page some time ago but haven't observed again until now.

What is causing this?

I forgot to mention another related big difference for me in 12.02 from 11.64. In the compose new mail message screen in 11.64, I got unreadable black text on a black background. In 12.02, the color of the text came from my Windows color scheme, and I could read the text on my black background.

I tried Mocha_Dark and liked how it blended well blacks, whites, and shades of gray. I ran into the same problem with that skin as with others of Opera hardcoding numerous text colors black, making them unskinable, e.g. the text on the manage bookmarks page, and unreadable on a black background.

For weeks, I have been trying to move from 9.67, which had no problems with black backgrounds, to a later version of Opera. I have slowly got a system that is usable but frankly sucks. Some frequently used parts, such as bookmarks, require a non black background, I have concluded, and many less frequently used parts, e.g. the cookie manager dialog box, require a change of skin or Windows color scheme whenever needed.

I have been looking for an alternative bookmark system. So far I haven't had any success.

The Opera bookmark system, while adequate for many people, including me, could have been enhanced in a number of ways.

A stand alone system could also bookmark local, non-html documents, like PDF and wordprocessing documents.

Does anyone have any knowledge and experience with any such systems?
