Opera x64 Version: 66.0.3515.44 appears to be stable.
The update to version Opera to 67.0.3575.115 does not appear to be stable.
When the upgrade is applied, Opera starts, displays it windows, and then locks up,
showing the windows with a white Overlay, and Windows' Task Manager CPU meter goes
      to 100%

Terminating Opera and restarting is only resulting in the same behavior.

As this situation doesn't resolve, the only 'fix' I've come up with is to
re-install Opera x64 Version: 66.0.3515.44 on top of the upgraded installation.
Running 66.0.3515.44 works well for days on end, but as soon as you restart
Opera will try to upgrade again to 67.0.3575.115, which then locks up.

Using the setting tab / window / page, I've cleaned out the browser cache before
the upgrade, but this doesn't help. It's back to the lock up behavior.

What are the next things to try? Is there a self-help page with steps?

ut as soon as you restart
Opera will try to upgrade again

In Opera's installation folder, in the 66.0.3515.44 folder, delete/rename opera_autoupdate.exe and Opera won't be able to update on you.

For 67.0.3575.115, download the installer, launch it, click "options", set "install path" to a folder named "Opera Test" on your desktop, set "install for" to "standalone installation", uncheck "import data from default browser", and install.

Test in that Opera, but do not install any extensions, do not enable Opera Sync, do not import anything into Opera, and do not enable Opera's VPN.

Does that Opera at least work fine. If not, launch that Opera in a command prompt with launcher.exe --disable-gpu to see if it fixes things.

Testing with 67.0.3575.115 like that will tell you if it's a hardware acceleration issue or not or if it's an issue with your normal Opera profile.

If the test Opera works fine, try tweaking things like you would a regular Opera if you were to use it fully. Then see if you can get Opera to mess up. If so, try to think of the last thing you did. If you figure out the cause, you might be able to fix your regular Opera profile so you can upgrade to 67.0.3575.115. Or, you could just start with a completely fresh profile.

Hey, thanks for the hints burnout. Much appreciated.

I checked and noticed that I was running a 32 bit version of Opera. With 6 windows and about a dozen tabs open in each, I think perhaps that I hit the 32 bit memory limit. In fact, now that I think about it, a couple of times I've seen an 'out of memory' error message from Opera.

I installed a 64 bit version in another directory, started it up using the existing profile, and it is stable now at Version:67.0.3575.115 64 bit.

Opera sync is good. I wonder if the data that it syncs could include the plugins and other configuration settings. The idea being that when you sign into Opera sync, your Opera session and all plugins and settings are added to make the new instance replicate the entire Opera environment from the synced settings. Kinda how Chrome does it. Just a thought.

Well that looked like it was working, but rebooted the PC, restarted the Opera session, and same results.

Kept trying backwards versions, and finally ended up with Opera_66.0.3515.115_Setup_x64 which started the and is running. Odd that the 32 bit version and the 64 bit version which seem be work, also seem to share the same version root: 66.0.3515.

Some users get that if they use Opera's battery saver feature. If it's on, disable it in settings.

                    Two ideas to test.

                    1. turn hardware acceleration off
                    2. (if applicable) turn your third party antivirus or security site off or make exclusion for Opera

I notice that my Opera profile is 884 MB in size.
Is there a list of directories that can be manually cleaned out?

All I want to save from my Opera profile are my browser settings, my plugins / addons and their settings and the present windows / tabs. I don't think any of the rest of the profile would be an issue.

There you can find some info about the files and folders in Opera's profile directory.
