Usually I use ctrl+shift when clicking to link for opening in tab but sometimes Opera opens new window.
How to avoid this and limit Opera only to new tabs?

With 2nd Opera instance is a problem, that when forgot and going to close Opera, then Opera may not restore main content but only this last single link.

        @oberator

Anyone out there - isn't there an option to stop Opera opening new instance instead new tab?

        Thanks.

I don't understand how any extension could help to control Opera behavior.
Sorry if I couldn't express myself clearly.
Problem is that Opera doesn't open new tab but another Opera. (double or even triple Opera on task bar)
There is no control when it happens but if forgot to close this new Opera windows then all work is easily lost.

Doesn't make much of sense to me as anyway in task manager there is already running several Opera processes.

@oberator If a link will be opened in the same tab, in a new one or in a new window is a site decision. Some browsers may allow you to ignore such site decision.

Thanks, I try to gather some statistics, when it happens.
But IMO it's often Ebay which may start new Opera but it's not a rule.

Is Opera really opening a new instance or just a new window? There's a difference. Only one instance of Opera is allowed to access the Opera profile directory at a time. Opening a new window still uses the same instance that's already open.

I guess you could goto the URL opera://about in both windows to make sure they're both using the same installation and profile directories. If they are, then it's just the site opening a new window, which shouldn't be a problem. If the profile path is different in the other Opera windows, that's weird and sounds like something is wrong.

If not closed instantly consequences are fatal.

Did you modify Opera's shortcut to add the --private switch so that Opera opens in a private window by default? Or, are you normally in a private window when Ebay for example opens up a new window?

Correct is obviously that Opera opens new Window when not expected.
Today I have tested Ebay ctrl+shift opens new window instead new tab approximately 1 of 5.
Repetitive opening same link new window instead new tab is same approximately 1 of 5.

When main Opera Window is closed 1st and any extra Opera window closed 2nd, then restarting Opera doesn't restore main window but this extra without any history records.

Rather tedious to keep track of this behavior.

I can't reproduce this. Sounds like your control key is failing to activate sometimes when clicking as if you were holding down just shift.

Do you hold down ctrl, hold down shift and then click or do you try to hit ctrl + shift and click all at the same time? If the latter, the chances of it not working correctly are higher.

If you close the main window first, the 2nd window becomes the main window. The first is not supposed to be restored. So, that part is normal.

                        without any history records.

You mean that when Opera starts back up with just the second window and you press ctrl + h to goto history, the history is totally empty? Or, do you just mean that all your tabs are missing from the first window (because you closed it)?

I tested this and couldn't reproduce the history records being empty after shift + click on an ebay link and then closing the first window and restarting. When Opera starts up and I hit ctrl + h, the records are still there.

If ctrl + shift + click on a link (on ebay for example) is triggering the behavior you're saying, I just can't reproduce it myself. Maybe someone else can.

You could test with a new Opera profile just to see if it's something wrong with yours. Download the Opera installer, launch it, click "options", set "install path" to a folder named "Opera Test" on your desktop, set "install for" to "standalone installation", uncheck "import data from default browser" and install. Test in that Opera but don't install any extensions and don't enable Opera Sync.

Not answer to limiting windows, but if you just use Ctrl+Click, what happens then? For me, Shift+Click opens new window, Ctrl+Click new tab - Ctrl+Shift+Click could be undefined.

I am afraid you hit the nail head - my keyboard ctrl is a little bit tired and kbd probably needs replacement.
There have been also occasions when ctrl+c didn't work.
I just didn't know there might be another shortcut so similar.
I try to keep in mind to provide later feedback. (but as well if there isn't any reply in 2 weeks this was a solution)

My posting was initiated because this flaw also deleted all previously opened tabs history.
Reopening Opera didn't include previously opened tabs.

                                Just clean it.
Shake it upside down or take the keys out.

If a laptop, look for the service manual.
