JavaScript is installed, updated and enabled, but doesn't work

I'm using Opera for Mac (latest version) and keep having problems on sites that rely heavily on Java, like Patreon, and also when using Tweetdeck, i.e. they don't load properly. Sometimes a site will show a message that Java needs to be enabled, but when I go into the browser settings I find that Java is allowed. It improved for a while after the last Java update but suddenly the problem is happening again. I've also checked my laptop's Java settings and everything looks fine. Anyone else experience this?

@catwrangler It's been a while that Java is no longer supported by most browsers. No serious sites should be using Java nowadays.
Or are talking about JavaScript, that has no relation with Java?

Sorry folks, that should indeed have read "Javascript" (I'll see if I can edit the subject line).

@catwrangler JavaScript is not something that you install.
Check if there isn't any extension or software blocking JavaScript.
