You can install Opera wherever you want. However, your profile and cache folders will be on your %appdata% directory, usually on the system drive.

You should be able to use a Chromium command line to change the path to the profile folder.

SSD drives are there to be used too.

Here I thought if you did a standalone install the profile was in the install folder ...

it is..at least on mine it is...Opera Portable\profile\data

            Install: J:\Opera Portable
            Profile: J:\Opera Portable\profile\data
            Cache: J:\Opera Portable\profile\data

Just frustrating that I can't set it as 'default browser'

              Thanks for yours answers.
At the last installing (yesterday) OPERA, Version: 58.0.3135.68, the installer don't ask, where to install.!! Can I use the Symbolic links?

Is the Chromium command like the Symbolic link, e.g. Junction?

The portable version is clear, may be the last end .

                Image

I just chose Install Path and Stand-alone installation...Opera did the rest 🙂
make sure of course you are installing the 'portable version'
I've now opted to use opera this way instead of having it on my C: Drive, I much prefer it.
I chose to install mine to a secondary drive where I keep all my portable programs.

You can use http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/register-firefox-portable-with-default-programs-in-vista/ to set Opera's launcher.exe as the default browser. It'll just be listed as Mozilla Firefox in Default Apps/Programs.

                      Thanks for all.
I think, I must use the portable version.

                        The problem is resolved:
At installation-time I dont see the option-field for the installation place. Now Opera is saved on D:\ . The Path for 'profile' and 'Cache' file are assigned with the the MKLINK-Command:
                        mklink /J "C:\Users\Peter\AppData*Roaming*\Opera Software*Opera Stable*" "D:\OperaProfil*Opera Stable*"
                        mklink /J "C:\Users\Peter\AppData*Local*\Opera Software*Opera Stable*" "D:\OperaCache*Opera Stable*"

And Opera is the default browser.

Thanks to all for your teamwork.
