Can't set Opera as standard web browser

Hi, I've been installing some old versions of Opera as a novelty, and for some reason, 11.64 went ahead and set itself as the standard browser for handling links and stuff. I thought I'd unticked "set this as standard browser", but obviously I'd missed that one.
In 12.16, which I want to be my standard, you have the option of setting "Check that Opera is the standard browser" or however it goes in English. I've ticked that, closed it and started it up again, but it never asks me what to use as the default browser.
I'm using Windows 7. In the control panel, you can "set your default programmes". Oddly, I couldn't change the browser for handling URLs and a bunch of other abbreviations that "Opera" was set to handle. It just said "Opera", but this meant 11.64.
So I thought I might as well uninstall Opera 11.64, I can reinstall it later if I want to mess around with it. But the problem now is that Windows seems to think Opera is not installed. As in, it doesn't appear in the "set your default programmes", and it read Opera 11.64 simply as "Opera".
Is there any way to "re-affirm" Opera 12.15 as the standard browser? Are there still traces off old Opera versions once you uninstall them? (I'm guessing yes).
