Try using the settings page.

This means that it's not available.
Good call. Now I have spellcheking in both languages. However it doesn't make sense to me. Why there is a default language and not a default dictionary?

I m very frustrated with this i had to revert back to 55.0.2994.37 so spell check works again
i also had to create an account that i did NOT WANT i just wanted to revert the auto-update.there is NO setting to prevent the auto update and there is NO rule that proves that updating is great and better
i also got MAD i WANT TO USE MY OWN PASSWORDS not that BS not what you force me to do
most people then forget those
thank you

https://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/desktop/55.0.2994.37/problem solved now prevent opera from auto-update block the opera_autoupdaterexe on the firewall.
its a bug not a user problem
thank you

Hi:
The only way to add spell checking for a language is to be specific. I mean, not only adding the language but adding the language for a specific culture or country. In your case yo have added English (generic), but if you want to enable spell checking in this language you should be specific and add, for example English (United States), such as this:
If I've added only "Spanish" I culdn't have enabled the spell checker for that language. However, as soon as I add "Spanish (Spain)" the corresponding checkbox in the
Spell Check
section is ready to be enabled.HTH.
