My ISP asked me to use a different browser on a login problem, so I am trying Opera. To my surprise, I keep seeing "chrome" pop up on the url line when going to the opera config, etc. The idea of running a browser program on my computer that was written by a company that collects and sells information, is (I am sorry, I cannot think of a polite word that describes someone doing that). I thought Opera had nothing to do with Chrome. On the screen when I enter a url, a google search window is there which integrates with my search, without being asked. Nothing that I found in config allows me t adjust that.

It hadn't, except for the fact that both are based on Chromium.

Yes, Opera uses Google as it default search engine like many other browsers do.

Opera is based on Chromium which is an open source browser from which Google Chrome derives its code, Chromium IS NOT Google Chrome however, but Google does contribute significantly to the Chromium project.

You can change the default search engine if you do not wish to use Google. Go to Settings > Browser and under "Search" you can select a different search engine. DuckDuckGo is great if you're concerned about privacy.
