Yes the old free VPN was good and had decent overall speeds.

This new VPN is very slow but still decent for strictly text usage. However the new VPN is slow for loading pics and totally useless for viewing videos. Since nothing is being done to improve it, perhaps this was the intent of Opera all along. After all Opera VPN is free.

Hi, running Opera 49.0.2725.64 (PGO) in win 10 64-bit.
I've set VPN to the Americas and a lot of websites show their ads in the Norwegian language. Just pulled up the Washington Post website and their ads showed up in English, Norwegian and Russian.
Interesting! Looks like VPN needs some more work to actually function.

While Opera's blog post explains why there has been a change in the VPN services, having to go back to aDSL speeds for web browsing is a horrible alternative. The built-in VPN support was my reason for switching to Opera as my default browser. As it is now, I'm using a different browser again when I need a VPN. Is there any official word that the performance degradation is going to be addressed or is this now the way it will be with Opera?

When they return from the Holidays break, they may start working on getting VPN issues fixed.

@leocg Thank you for acknowledging that there is a problem. Hopefully you are right and Opera will address and fix the problem; keeping in mind that the VPN is their competitive edge.

@gloewa This is not an info. I was just pointing that they probably are on a end-of-the-year break and nothing would be solved before their return.

not completely accurate, while most of us are frustrated with the vpn opera's main value for me is the fact that opera opens far faster than either firefox or chrome, and the fact that opera doesn't get as bogged down anywhere near as bad as firefox and chrome can.

In the U.S., when I use VPN and pick a site in the Americas and go to YouTube, why am I offered almost 90% Russian YouTube videos?

                              Is this normal?

Something I should be worried about?

                              Many thanks.

It doesn't open "far faster" when the VPN is slow; it takes time to validate the VPN tunnel.

yes it does. from the time i click on the opera i can till the interface is open is at least 10 times faster than firefox or chrome. but you knew what i was referring to.

Opera Gold refers to a paid upgrade version of an iOS/iPad app in Apple's App Store, offered by OSL Network Services Limited, which operates over Opera's former SurfEasy's VPN service:

This app is only available on the App Store for iOS devices.
This app is designed for both iPhone and iPad
                                            Seller: OSL Network Services Limited

From the business listing of OSL Network Services:

Osl Network Services Limited was set up on Monday the 22nd of February 2016. Their current address is Dublin 2, and the company status is Normal. The company's current directors Petter Lade and Roar Olbergsveen have been the director of 6 other Irish companies between them.

                                            Registered Address:
                                            Fitzwilliam Business Centre,
                                            77 Sir John Rogerson's Quay,
                                            Dublin 2, Ireland

It's unclear (to me) just how the paid app may have been affected, if at all, by Opera's sale of SurfEasy in September 2017.
