Why did my bookmarks all disappear and how can I get them back?

This morning Opera was fine. All my bookmarks were there. In fact, there were all there when I closed the browser, but when I went to open it again about a half hour later, they were completely gone. After finding this forum I searched to see if someone else had the problem and a solution. I found one, but their solution does not work for me. I can find no way to restore the bookmarks backup. I had many bookmarks. I find it interesting that I can still access my cookies, my history, even autofill, but no bookmarks. I don't fancy starting over and I'm not happy about losing the bookmarks.
The other person who had the problem said he right clicked on the bookmarks and boommarks.bak files and got a dialog box that allowed him to restore. Looking at his screenshot, I looked for the same, but I don't get that dialog box when I right click. (I'm using Vista). I can open the files in Opera which open as html code which is no help either. Is there a solution or am I stuck with starting over? And what if they disappear again. And what is this about doing backups?

Well, it will depend on what happened and maybe also on if you have a backup.
Did you notice something strange, like a crash?
If you can see bookmarks and bookmarks.bak files in Opera's profile folder, rename the first to bookmarks.old and the second to bookmarks. Then start Opera and check if you got your bookmarks back.
Or, if you have a (recenT) backup, just replace those files by the ones you have
And what if they disappear again
Well, you can always restore the backup.
And what is this about doing backups?
A backup is something you do when you have importante files in your computer and don't want to lose them.

Thank you for your reply. I have no idea what caused the bookmarks to disappear. Opera didn't crash nor did the PC. I renamed the bookmarks files and restarted Opera, but no change, probably because I had already imported bookmarks from Firefox again.
About backups, I thought there might be something in Opera specifically that a permitted one to backup or export bookmarks, but I can't find anything. At least next time (which hopefully doesn't happen) I'll know how to restore bookmarks.

Its called Opera Sync. Its icon is in Opera on the upper right, just below the X to close a window. You have to be signed in and having synchronization enabled for it to backup your bookmarks.

Well, you should find a way to backup the data on your HDD and not depend on each program to have a backup/export tool.

Most probably.

No sync feature should be used as a backup one because if you delete something (by mistake or not), it will be propagated and you will lost the original file and the backup.
