Version: 46.0.2597.32 (PGO) - Opera is up to date
      Update stream: Stable
      System: Windows 10 64-bit

In the last two days, Opera has been putting a debug.log file on my desktop after launching Opera. My start page is about:blank

If I delete the file, it returns when I close Opera. The file is the same in both cases. Here is the file:

[0630/114023.019:INFO:rc_l10n_handler.cc(131)] Language not in the available languages list: en-US
[0630/114023.019:INFO:rc_l10n_handler.cc(137)] Trying language from system preferred list: en-US
      [0630/114023.020:INFO:rc_l10n_handler.cc(180)] Retrying after adjustments: en-US
[0630/114023.020:INFO:rc_l10n_handler.cc(137)] Trying language from system preferred list: en

Is there anyway to stop this file from being placed on the desktop?

Update. If I don't delete the file, it grows by the same 4 lines on launch of Opera and after closing Opera. If not deleted, it looks like the file will grow and grow and grow.

I could only find one of such files in Opera Beta folder.

Did you try an reinstall? Did you check Opera's shortcut to see if there isn't any command line in it?

Yes, I tried a reinstall. The thing that is puzzling is that the file shows up simply because I launched Opera. All it's doing is checking for the preferred language. If it wasn't growing and is a "sore" on my desktop, I'd not worry.

If you're talking about the shortcut I used to launch, it's simply the exe for Opera. There are no %this or launch that. It opens to a blank page.

            Thank you for your interest.

Is Opera installed under Program Files?

To answer your last question, yes. Here is some more information. It's "fixed" - sort of.

After reading your comment, I got to thinking about the shortcut I use to open Opera
                "C:\Program Files (x86)\Opera\launcher.exe"

I have triple monitors, so my desktop is showing somewhere all the time. I have used this registry edit for years. I've never had a problem.

If I right-click on the desktop, I have my most used programs as context entries.

Being curious, I went to the install folder and launched by double-clicking and also by right-clicking and running as administrator. NO debug.log files have been generated.

I pinned Opera to my task bar and I have a clean launch now.

I just double checked. There is a log generated from my right-click shortcut and NO log if I use the pinned Opera program or launch from the program folder.

                Go figure.

Update! I think I really fixed the problem, this time. I just didn't like having Opera pinned to my task bar. I did some more investigating - trying things. I went to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Opera\launcher.exe" and right-clicked and went to properties. I clicked the "Compatibility" tab. I checked "Run this program as an administrator". Now, my desktop right-click menu brings up Opera WITHOUT the debug.log. Here's hoping.

You shouldn't be running most software (and especially not web browsers) as administrator. That means you are allowing the program to change anything on your computer without asking you.

Oops! Thank you for the advice. I did not know that. Back to the drawing board. Thanks again.

One more update. I removed run as admin and the debug.log file is back. I think I'll let sleeping dogs lie. It's just annoying. I really appreciate the advice about running as admin. I'm sure glad I decided to share my "success", otherwise I may have really had problems down the line. Thanks again, sgunhouse.

The third times the charm - update. My biggest complaint was the debug.log file glares at me from my desktop. Since I like my right-click menu and don't won't to pin Opera to the task bar, I figured what the heck. The file grows and has to be deleted at some point, but, even though it's on my desktop, my desktop is not on my SSD - dedicated OS - I'm not concerned with the write-delete function happening. I hid the file on my desktop. Out of sight, out of mind - but not quite. I use Crap Cleaner. I added an include to have this file deleted every time I run CC. I do this once a week and use Macrium Reflect as my back-up software. Now, out of sight and deleted weekly without having to remember it, and I'm good to go. I think I've recorded ALL the things that I've seen and done to remove this niggling file. I'm pretty sure I'm the only one in the Universe to experience this file being deposited on my desktop. I really appreciate all the comments and help I've received. I like to think this is what community is all about. I'm notified via email if you comment. I'm available to give you more information if you ask for it.

I like Opera. It has served me well for many years. Thanks all!
