Opera opens mobile version of Youtube videos - won't play

I'm using Opera 44.0 on Windows 7, have been for many years (apart from the Opera rev of course).

Fairly recently, every time I follow a link to any Youtube video, Opera tries to open it in m.yoube.con/watch, and then it won't play - I get an 'unknown protocol' error.
If I try to play a Youtube video in a private window, it works fine.

I can play Youtube videos fine in other browsers.

What gives? Why it is trying to force m.youtube.com?

If it works in a private window, try clearing cookies.

Also disable extensions if you are using any.
