Opera One looks very nice in my opinion, I just download it both in Windows and Linux, I use it in linux on 7 machines while in windows only in 1 (Job), at first I was kind on disappointment not to see GhatGPT and ChatSonic buttons on the sidebar but fortunately there´s option to add them Great Job Opera!, I could be back to using Opera as my main web browser on all my devices I just hope Widevine doen´t get broken for not including the correct libffmpeg.so that includes h264 needed by widevine, it was kind of anonnyg that everytime Opera got updated that thing changed even if I had my h264 libffmpe.go on /usr/lib/chromium-browser/libs/

Opera could be the linux web browser leader of all times, but it needs more attention from opera support to linux users.

Just read the review below, this is the point of view of many Opera Linux Users.. But I have to say that until now Opera Captivated me again!!.. Congratulations!

I love you Guys!! Please don´t get me wrong.. You guys make one of the best Web Browsers for Linux and I love you... But! Please stop making us suffer.

I stop using Opera Browser for Linux some time ago since it gave me problems with Widevine.. I found that the problem was that libffmpeg.so inclueded in opera does not have H264 so based on ffmpeg_preload_config.json I created /lib/chromium-browser/libs and saved libffmpeg.so from https://github.com/iteufel/nwjs-ffmpeg-prebuilt/releases/

This used to work great with Opera 64.x but now it does´t work with version 81.

I came back to Opera and Darn!!! problems again.

Come on opera! Why it does n´t work anymore?

I don´t wanna use Chrome or any other Web Browser.. I want to use Opera..

You guys decide if you want to make opera the #1 linux browser or not.

@GGINO tuve ese problema hace algunos meses, cada actualización de Opera volvía a reemplazar libffmpeg.so sin soporte de H264 necesaria para widevine. Sin widevine no es posible ver netflix, spotify, etc.

El archivo '/usr/lib64/opera/resources/ffmpeg_preload_config.json' contiene lo siguiente:

"../../../../chromium-ffmpeg/libffmpeg.so",
"/usr/lib/chromium-browser/libffmpeg.so",
"/usr/lib/chromium-browser/libs/libffmpeg.so"
]

La solución fue abrir una terminal y escribir lo siguiente:

mkdir -p /usr/lib/chromium-browser/libs/
unzip software/0.47.2-linux-x64.zip -d /usr/lib/chromium-browser/libs/

Esto me funciona en Mageia Linux 8 beta 1, Supongo que en los linux basados en Debian / Ubuntu el archivo '/usr/lib64/opera/resources/ffmpeg_preload_config.json' es identico. Afortunadamente le da prioridad sobre libffmpeg.so incluido en Opera.

@l33t4opera Any plans to fix widevine on linux?.. it used to work after replacing libffmpeg.so with h264 support and some changes to the widevine_config.json that points to the correct chrome widevine path... but since 2 updates ago it stop working.. I don't see the point of having opera on linux with no posibility to watch netflix or listen to spotify,

@maydin95 Hello and sorry for the delay.. My hard drive broke and I did not had any linux installed to test.

It seems to me that the Opera Developers don't have the intention to support widevine in Opera linux for some reason.

I did many changes and tests.
modified the widevine.config.json from: /opt/google/chrome/libwidevinecdm.so to /opt/google/chrome/WidevineCdm/_platform_specific/linux_x64/libwidevinecdm.so (and subsecuent) since the latest chrome changed the libwidevinecdm.so location.

I downloaded the latest libffmpeg.so and made sure H.264 support was enabled (Test it on: https://html5test.com/).

I created a soft link using: ln -s /opt/google/chrome/WidevineCdm/_platform_specific/linux_x64/libwidevinecdm.so /opt/google/chrome/ to be able to keep the original widevine_config.json file from opera (This worked great before so I didn't have to modify it everytime opera got updated.

Nothing works...

In conclusion.. Opera doesn't work with widevine anymore (As of today), I hope the Opera Developers would explain why, but probably they don't care about linux users anymore.

I even installed Opera for Windows and noticed that there is a folder named WidevineCdm located at: C:\Users\userprofile\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable\WidevineCdm\ that seems to be google Chrome's.. so did the same on the linux side and did many tests, I even changed the manifest.json with no success.

I noticed that in the manifest.json file the widevine library for linux is not defined so I did it myself.. Still it doesn't work.

I have to say that I love Opera but since it doesn't work with widevine anymore and unable to watch netflix and listen to spotify I will remove it from my system.

I'll keep you posted just in case it works for me.

Update:

I just noticed that widevine stop working with my opera Version:64.0.3417.83. The problem is that Google Chrome change their libwidevinecdm.so location from /opt/google/chrome/libwidevinecdm.so" to: opt/google/chrome/WidevineCdm/_platform_specific/linux_x64/

All you have to do is modify your widevine_config.json in the resources folder of your opera (Mine is in /usr/lib64/opera folder)...

One tip...

Visit https://html5test.com and make sure H.264 support is enabled on the Video Section.. otherwise widevine will not work.

It seems widevine requires H.264 support.

In some distros you need to add libffmpeg.so to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera

I'm using Mageia 7.1 64bit and I had to install it to /usr/lib64/opera

Just replace the one that comes included with your opera installation with the one from https://github.com/iteufel/nwjs-ffmpeg-prebuilt/releases/

It all has to do with "libffmpeg.so" included with opera for Linux.
Replace it with this one - > https://github.com/iteufel/nwjs-ffmpeg-prebuilt/releases/

Once replaced you will have h264 and widevine support.

I looked everywhere to fix widevine support, but once I found out how to fix h264 that widevine (AFAIK) requires, everything started working.

It's too bad Opera hasn't fix this or doesn't care...

I really want widevine to work.. Flash is not that used anymore anyway.

Flash player works great.

Still no widevine yet... So I cannot play spotify or netflix in Opera Linux.

On Google Chrome I enabled flash playback with no success, it might be what you mentioned.

Flash on firefox for linux works great as well as widevine on both firefox and google chrome.

Unfortunately Opera does not and there seems no interest in opera to fix this.

Wow!! I just tried this page:

And flash is blocked even if I choose to let flash to be executed.

Opera Linux is still blocking flash content.

I right click and choose Run Plugin and it still does not work.

Opera Linux looks nice and works fast.. But... still needs to get this fixed.

You can create a free spotify account.

Once I login to play.spotify.com I got this:

For: Google Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.

On Opera for Windows I could not make spotify Play, probably since it was downloading widevine. I tried music.google.com and I could not play music eigther, but after a minute I was able to play on both of them.

I really like Opera, it has very nice features but it lacks of widevine. I saw that there is a config file pointing to google chrome,s widevine libraries but it still does not work..

I hope this is fixed soon and I bet many Linux users would use Opera as default.

Too bad Opera doesn't support widevine on linux. It is a great web browser with very nice features but I usually watch netflix and have whatsapp on another tab firefox to be aware of my messages while charging my phone.

Please Opera, fix this!!

Why it does work on Windows and Not Linux (It's not fair to ignore linux)
