I have updated Flash Player from version 14 to 16.0.0.235 (NPAPI).
Youtube worked with version 14, but now it does not work. I just get the black box where the video is supposed to load.
Any suggestions that does not involve Opera Blink?

For Opera 12 you have to select Flashplayer for Firefox NPAPI at Flashplaer download, see http://get.adobe.com/de/flashplayer/otherversions/ .
I suspected I would have to choose the Firefox version for Opera, so thanks!
I have seen more intuitive options...
Here is a screenshot of the install options for Adobe Flash Player.

It offers a PPAPI version for "Opera and Chromium", and this makes me suspicious. This may be incompatible with Opera 12?
Thanks.
Ah, now I remember. The forum moved and only a small part of the content was saved.
I think they should have moved everything. When they decided to delete content, they decided what was important to each one of us, and I think that is a rude policy.
Another reason that 12.14 was preferred by some over later Presto versions was that the default search engine could be changed at will and stuck, whereas IIRC the later versions kept shoving Google at you!
I had forgotten about the search engine, that's one reason. I very much value the freedom to choose search engine, and customize everything.

@sgunhouse: I do have automatic updates turned off, so I understand 12.14 is the best Presto version. I know Pesala uses 11.64 and he has his reasons. I think he use other versions too.

The biggest online risk is drive-by downloads, and I don't know how vulnerable Opera 12 (and 11) is regarding this threat. But I hope extensions such as Ghostery and Adblock will stop dangerous scripts.

I sometimes use 12.02 when I read plain text pages, because 12.10 and newer are incredibly slow at finding plain text. Nobody seems to understand the reason for the severe plain text slowness but it's a problem nonetheless.
I have made a few hundred posts, probably around 500, now I'm down to 40-something. Postcount is not a critical feature but I do like to know how many times I've posted. Could you not have avoided this data loss?
All right, thanks for your input leushino. But far from all security upgrades are major, so other things may count more. For example, 12.14 is often preferred over 12.16 because 12.14 has less issues with website compatibility. As far as I can remember, there was no big difference in security between 12.14 and 12.16. I don't know about 12.17.
I remember that parts of this community recommended 12.14 as the best Opera version, and I know why 12.14 is preferred over 12.16. But I can't remember anyone ever mentioned 12.17. I'm not at home so I don't have access to the shortcuts to earlier threads here, and I can't find it by searching. I don't find the advanced search options by the way. Maybe they don't exist anymore, I barely recognize the forum.
To anyone who are about to write a reply recommending "Chrome-Opera", please don't. I'm not interested in that sort of help. What I need help with, is to choose between 12.14 and 12.17. Thanks.
I enabled js globally and extensions began to work. I don't know which domain is responsible for this. Can I not keep js disabled globally, enable js for sites that needs js, and still use extensions? Perhaps by enabling js for some domain that extensions communicate with, but I don't know what domain that is.
Strange, very strange. As I have said, all three of the extensions I have installed are working no problem. I have even tried loads others over the course of using this version (12.14) and not had problems with them either. My previous extended use (USB) version was 11.64, and had no problem with extensions on that version.
Have you tried a clean USB install ?, though I have used this same Opera profile over many years, just copying the folder over to the new version as I upgrade.
I installed about seven versions of Opera as stand-alone installs. The versions don't interfer with one another. I guess this would be "clean" installs.
I just came to think about something. Do the extensions depend on certain domains to have javascript enabled? I have javascript globally disabled, I only enable it when a domain I visit needs it. But enabling js for the domain I do visit is not enough to make the extensions work, so perhaps js also must be enabled for some domain I don't visit.
The settings page for the extensions seems to be located at wuid-[long number here], but enabling js and everything else on that wuid "domain" doesn't help. By the way, all the settings pages are completely empty. I have now tried extensions on the stand-alone version of 12.16, same problem. No extensions will work.
+1. Thanks for including that synopsis, especially the memory stats... you've certainly been busy! I'm going to bookmark the post as a useful future reference to give to users asking the "which version does what" question.
I'm not sure what caused the "Chinese" character issues, but I do recall a few infrequent user posts in the My Opera forums regarding similar experiences, though after being advised to reinstall with a fresh download from the Opera site, not much further feedback resulted. Perhaps that was only because they simply downloaded an English version thereafter.
I believe new features and big changes are often made on even version numbers, such as 11.00 and 11.50, and maybe 11.10 and 11.60. But for testing I chose uneven versions, when new features had hopefully matured a little and bugs been weeded out, like xx.01 and xx.64. So my list is not necessarily accurate for finding exactly what version introduced this or that.
I now tried to post with 9.64 but it was impossible to quote, clicking the quote button sent me to the top of the page! And my login button was in the upper left corner instead of upper right corner. Funny...
I can no longer edit my previous post, but I want to correct a typo that may cause confusion:
"Opera 11.11: Speed Dial much improved and now it let the user designate custom names. [...]"
I plan to test 11.60, 11.61 and 11.62 soon.
Regarding the Chinese, I never got it before. I think I always used to download the international setup (EXE, not MSI), but this time I chose English language. Earlier I used Norwegian. It's supposed to be the same Setup, but maybe there's a bug that mixes Chinese and English when English is chosen. I don't know. The lack of Google and Yahoo was also strange. Instead there were alternative Chinese search engines, Yandoo and something else.
I have now tried to install extensions in 12.14 too. I could install "NoAds Advanced" (it would not install in 12.02), but I can't get any of the extensions to work.
I use a portable version of 12.14 (exclusively) on Linux and Windows, just in different folders, and I have the same extensions installed in both of them, namely 'AdBlock', 'Slim scrollbar' and 'oClock' and they work fine, But I never bother with the toolbar icons.
Thank you for the reply. I depend on the toolbar buttons, that's where I control the extensions. But I don't just miss the buttons, the extensions don't work.
I have a stand-alone installment of Opera 12.02 and I try to install extensions. All installed extensions are showing up in SHIFT+CTRL+E, but they don't add buttons in the Opera window.
I have installed amongst others:
AdBlock (by adblockforopera)
External Scripts
Ghostery
WOT
All these are supposed to put a button beside the address field. I have used them before, in a normal installment of Opera.
I've never had as big printing problems as reported here, but I've had small problems with Opera printing web pages a bit too small. Usually I had to enlarge the page, 110% or more. Didn't have this issue with IE6, it prints better.
Opera 12 sucks at printing So, it could be just that.
@burnout426, are some versions better? Do you happen to know which Presto Opera version prints the best?
Bookmarks: 40 in 4 folders
Speed dial: 202 in 16 folders
Stash: 789
202 speed dials? Lol....
I would guess that when you reach a certain point, the amount of speed dials begin to take a toll on the hardware? I have only 12 speed dials.
Oddly, there are two program folders in Opera 20, one entitled "Program Files x86", which contains Opera 20 files,
It's because you have a 64 bit system. "x86" is for 32-bit files.
Recently I had a spring cleaning in my bookmarks and deleted many that were broken.
Bookmarks: 1390.
Folders: 273.
I have 10 browsers installed, and I imported the bookmarks in every browser. But 10 x 1390 doesn't count, or what.
In my archive I've got close to 3000 folders, and I reckon there's a few thousand Internet shortcuts there. It would be fun to know the number, but I don't know how to count the bookmarks without counting other files.
Quoting Pesala:
Opera 11.64: Better pagedown/pageup behaviour, minimum tab width respected in skins, plays WAV files, broken indented lists, broken PDF plugins on Windows 7, won't login to IrfanView forum, crashes frequently on JIRA.
Opera 12.16: Pings on using Alt Key to type — for example, but works on those two sites.
Opera 20: Works on all sites, PDF plugins OK, no mail client, no customisation, no custom buttons, menus, shortcuts, gestures, or skins, always a low-pitched humming noise while it's running. No tab-stacking, no sessions, no notes for boiler-plate text: etc.
I uninstalled 12.16, that let me install other versions as stand-alone. Then I spent a day trying out 9.24, 9.64, 10.63, 11.01, 11.11, 11.52, 11.64, 12.02 and 12.14.
Several of the versions (international setup) had Chinese bookmarks and Chinese pages on Speed Dial. What the Hell?! On a couple of the installments I had to add common search engines such as Google and Yahoo. They weren't there to begin with. I downloaded from Norway and chose International Setup, I shouldn't get a browser preloaded with Chinese bookmarks and Speed Dial pages.
9.24 I got rid of quickly, didn't even test it. I'm still testing the rest. 9.64 was a version I used from release in 2009 until 11.5 in 2011, since 11.5 I have updated regularly until 12.16.
Opera 9.64: Doesn't feel good now when I'm used to more modern browsers. • Total memory usage only 47 MB with no pages loaded.
Opera 10.63: Speed Dial improved and can room more. • Menu bar can be hidden. • Opera Unite added. • Synchronize Opera added. • Opera Links removed. • Spell checking. • Preferences > Advanced > Content: Java option removed. • Preferences > Advanced > Network: geolocation option added. • New option in Delete Private Data: persistent data. • Wand replaced. • New "Find in page" that looks different, and works slow in plain text. • Memory usage 99 MB, more than twice that of 9.64.
Opera 11.01: Extensions. • Plugins can be enabled on demand. • Memory usage dropped to 72 MB.
Opera 11.11: Speed Dial much improved and not lets the user designate custom names. But a downside (for me) is that Speed Dial don't show snapshots of pages, it shows only the header of pages. • Memory usage 111 MB.
Opera 11:52: Status Bar has become very fat and is wasting many pixels in height. • Memory usage 113 MB.*
Opera 11.64: New "featherweight" skin, it looks nice and the Status Bar is slim. But a big drawback is that the tabs have become flexible and sometimes they don't get their full width until you hover the mouse over them. The "alive" tabs sometimes makes me miss the X-button because the tab suddenly becomes a little wider when I get the mouse over it. • Easy way to opt out of the search suggestions in address field. • Two new options in Delete Private Data: plug-in data and geolocation data. • Memory usage 116 MB.
Opera 12.02: "opera:cpu" added. • Trashcan for closed tabs replaced. • Opera Unite hidden and deactivated by default. • Widgets options removed. • Finally you can drag a shortcut from the address field to ANY folder, not just to Desktop. Also, the shortcut is created exactly where you release the mouse button. • Ask websites not to track. • Voice control removed. • New option in Delete Private Data: camera permissions. • "Page down" changed to not scroll a whole page down in order to adapt to floating headers/bars that some popular websites use (bad reason!!). • Memory usage dropped to 73 MB!
Opera 12.14: Preferences > Advanced > Content: "Enable sound in webpages" removed. • New option in Delete Private Data: settings and data for all extensions. • "Find in page" search in plain text was always slow since Opera 10, but this is terribly slow (takes two minutes to search a word in a 1.4 MB .mht file), search is basically unusable. • Memory usage 73 MB.
Opera 12.16: Removed the possibility to add search engines in order to enhance security. • Search in plain text is not more possible than in 12.14. • Memory usage 73 MB.
(All memory usage notes are including usage of virtual RAM, and only one tab with Speed Dial was open.)
I think I had the third post in this thread, it's gone. I can't imagine any reason for it being deleted so I don't know what's going on.
