Speed dial change was the reason I registered on this forum. May be that was Opera's secret plan to increase the community activity?

Ok, although I would use [Duplicate] status it's not a big deal. It would be nice if you are able to attract dev's attention to the performance issue. It's makes using Opera unusable.

I do not think so because the workaround disables core UI features.

I had the issue on other sites. Root cause was "Automatic downloads" disabled.

@burnout426 Thanks, I didn't know about that option. The only item from the Amazon is "Amazon promotion". It's not the extension that was installed.

Problem:
Sometimes Opera or OS crashes and "Current Session" file become destroyed. Upon restarting Opera "Last Session" file is being overwritten with corrupted "Current Session" and there is only one way to recover the session: backup. Btw, if you have not performed any backups you can still try running cmd with admin rights and check if there are any shadow copies with

vssadmin List Shadows

If you see something similar to

you might be lucky as you can create a junction to a read-only shadow copy and check if a "Last Session" from that shadow copy can be used. Junction is created with the following command (last slash is important):

mklink /J C:\Users\opera_user\Desktop\C_Backup \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy7\

Good solution:
Automatically backup "Last Session", Although this solution is better than having not backups at all, it does not prevent losing tabs from current session. Oftenly session can last days or even weeks.

Even better solution:
Backup "Current Session" file. Unfortunately it is locked even for reading while Opera is running. The suggestion is to allow "Current Session" to be read in order to backup it.

Just checked Vivaldi browser. It has the same issue. Seems to be Chromium issue. Is this bug or feature?

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open URL on a domain never visited before. For example, https://web.archive.org/web/20200324184317/https://www.opera.com/
2. Wait for page to complete loading and close it
3. Open new tab and type root domain: https://web.archive.org (if URL https://web.archive.org/web/20200324184317/https://www.opera.com/ is suggested just clear the remaining chars and leave only https://web.archive.org)
4. Press Enter to load page
5. https://web.archive.org/web/20200324184317/https://www.opera.com/ is loaded instead of https://web.archive.org

Opera 68.0.3618.63 is very slow

I reported the speed dial issue some time ago (https://forums.opera.com/topic/32234/solved-opera-60-0-3255-70-slow-speed-dial-loading) but this is a bit different issue.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Install 67.0.3575.137 and clear both roaming and local profile
2. Open 40 Opera windows
3. Check the time needed to open 41st window. It should be about 1 or 2 seconds
4. Install Opera 68.0.3618.63
5. Open 40 Opera windows and clear both roaming and local profile
6. Check the time needed to open 41st window. It will be about 20 seconds. If there are a lot of items in Speed Dial window would open ever slower. While opening new window Opera is using 100% 2 cores CPU (i5-6200U).

Also there are other speed issues, Google Maps is working much slower in 68, it is also almost impossible to use Opera forums.

As a temporary solution I've downgraded back to 67.0.3575.137.

I hope you as moderator are interested in making Opera better. So, why not?

My 67.0.3575.137 is telling that there is a security update, so I checked 68.0.3618.165

New window is opened almost instantly if speed dial is hidden and takes about 10 seconds when speed dial is shown. CPU usage is almost 100% while opening new window. 67.0.3575.137 is working fast with the same amount of windows and speed dial bookmarks.

I think the main reason is the same.
