Live running video streams (Twitch and Youtube) crash when I reopen a recently closed tab.

The browser will do a 'screen flash' as if it just crashed and restored itself, interrupting any live streams that are playing.

It's not consistent in when it happens, only happening sometimes after prolonged use, and usually not twice in a row. Which could indicate an issue with the memory being used for the stream and having to find a closed tab. I would still say it happens very often. Youtube streams will usually rebuffer, while Twitch stream goes to an error message telling you to refresh the player. Other content (text, images, etc.) in any tabs stay loaded (uninterrupted).

Currently on Opera One 109.0.5097.35 on Windows 10, and this has been an issue that annoyed me since at least 108.x. I could not find it through searching the forums, so sorry if I missed a post about it.

To reproduce:

1. Have a live stream (or several) running in their own tabs.
2. Go to a website in a second tab.
3. Close the second tab and reopen it. Crash is inconsistent.

Issue:
I occasionally mistakenly close tabs in private mode, often due to tabs shifting around, accidentally middle-clicking the wrong tab, or accidentally double clicking, etc.

Suggestion:
It would be nice to have the option to enable a short tab/URL history so that you can reopen closed tabs for e.g. a minute, or customisable amount of time, before it is deleted entirely from Opera's memory. If the private window is closed, Opera should still forget the tabs and history as instantly as possible.

Issues/Reflections:
This should be an opt-in setting, as I believe it should work as it does by default to prevent any false sense of security. Perhaps it should even give you a clear warning when enabled, displayed once in every new private window to not be too obnoxious for regular users. Though I would personally prefer no warning at home, this could potentially be abused on public computers, especially if the time can be customized to last longer.

This started happening here as well, so I think it's a bug in the recent update. It doesn't mute all other tabs though. As far as I can tell, the tab mute button controls the tab (on/off) that is two tabs before it.

Running 98.0.4759.6 on Win10.

A workaround is to right click the tab and selecting mute/unmute, but it's an annoying bug so it should be a prioritized fix.

@gbws You cannot delete the default search engines, or edit them or their hotkeys in any way. This was added to Opera a long while ago, and I assume it has to do with paid deals with these brands, since it would otherwise make little sense to enforce it. Though it could also be a unified user experience choice. Either way, I have a feeling that Opera won't change this.

I have two workarounds for the issue:

• Use the keyword for your default search engine in these instances. E.g. "g b positive"
• Type out your search (e.g. "b positive"), then press tab or arrow keys to select your default search engine (should be the second option).

None of these will fix the annoyance of having a shortcut to a search engine that you don't want to use, but will allow you to search without going to the main page of the search engine first.

Seems like I can't edit my previous post, but I wanted to add that as a workaround you can also bind a key to mute/unmute in the setting highlighted here:
opera://settings/keyboardShortcuts?search=Toggle+mute+tab

This currently works in the active tab which means you have to swap tabs to mute, but it can be easier than dealing with the context-menu.

It's a bug that has been in the two latest stable versions (.6 and .15). The controller controls the tab two spaces in front of it. Unless it's the first tab, which will work properly:

@cratte Mine uses a lot less. It depends on what you store there.

• If you have open video or media tabs, the browser will store more data in your RAM (open streams) and possibly also in your local storage (stored media files or sections).
• You can limit the amount of cookies and data that is stored if you set Opera to delete it when you exit at: 'opera://settings/cookies'
• If you're storing website data on a drive with large file allocation sizes, smaller files will be bloated. I.e. each 0 b file become from 4 kb (normal drive setting) up to 2 MB+ (bad setting for browser drives).
• You could try to clear browsing data and use the Advanced option under 'opera://settings/clearBrowserData' to do a more thorough data clear. Note that this will make websites forget you, so you might have to log in again. If Opera is unable to clear this data for some reason, you can manually clear it at: '%LocalAppData%\Opera Software\Opera Stable\Cache' (Windows).

@leocg I can't find the original thread for this, but I also hope this gets fixed/reverted in the next release, as it is extremely annoying.

What is happening: Clicking on an inactive tab both activates it an instantly starts dragging it, and if the previously active tab is to the left, it collapses and instantly pulls all other tabs with it. If the use has enough tabs open, this causes a shift. The volume icon also has an effect on this, as it makes those tabs fluctuate more in width.

The issue seems better today, with none of my tabs amassing vast amounts of RAM. No Opera client update (been on 109.0.5097.68 for a while).

Not sure if YouTube changed some code on their end, which may also have been the source of the issue.

@leocg Did you get around to testing it with the posted video? It seems to start happening after the chat fills up a bit. Maybe a minute or two in.

I have tried it with no extensions, and with browser.js enabled and disabled. I have disabled the "Opening animation on start page" flag and enabled the "Show memory usage in hovercards." flag, but otherwise it's default.

I also tried disabling Aria, but I don't think my custom settings should have much effect on the issue. The main thing is that this was not an issue a few browser versions back on the same machine and browser setup, but has persisted a month or two now without being fixed. It makes it impossible to have chat open for more than a minute.

@leocg You're saying on a normal video, but did you try a live video with fast chat?

I can say this video does it for me (just a popular streamer for reference, not what I usually watch):

Opening the video it starts at about ~300 MB, but it quickly creeps up to ~1-2 GB and beyond after some moments in the foreground. While taking screenshots and pasting to a different application, I noticed the memory usage falls down to ~5-600 MB in the background, but it restores its previous usage as I tab back. Closing chat (with the big 'X') stops the tab from accumulating memory, and it will drop to normal levels after a few moments. Reopening the chat starts accumulating memory junk again.

I usually have "dark theme" (top right dots) and "cinema/theatre mode" on (press 't'), as well as "live chat" (not "top chat"). However, the normal "default view" and "top chat" also seemed to be troublesome. It may however take some time to start collecting junk in RAM, and I think I had one instance where I had issues identifying the tab in task manager at all (after which I closed the tab and made a new one, and the new tab was easy to identify again).

I run Windows 10, and I have about 30 other tabs open (mostly news, shops, etc. taking up ~5-30 MB RAM each).

Recently, watching Youtube streams has been terrible on Opera One.

With chat closed it works fine, but if chat is open Task Manager shows that RAM usage for that tab increases by ~50 MB per second without stopping until the tab crashes (out of memory). After only a few seconds, the stream starts struggling hard. CPU usage also increases 5-10x, but that's normal. Closing the chat (i.e. not the tab) stabilizes the tab, but it does not dump memory usage for a while.

Without chat enabled, the memory usage stays low and stable, correctly flushing video data rapidly from the RAM. So this only applies to chat, and it's probably worse on very active chats (streams with 5k+ live viewers) than slow chats.

@oythun Ah, that seems to be the cause! I've had two tabs pinned for a while, and didn't think to try unpinning them.

So it seems that every pinned tab makes the sound control act on one tab back for each of them.

@leocg The recovery option fixes the issue initially, but after readjusting settings (by manually doing it through Opera) and restarting the browser it bugs out again (without any extensions enabled). Not sure exactly what causes it. Too much of a hassle for me to reset everything again to locate the issue though.

I just did: Recover > Sound control worked (without restarting browser) > Adjusted my settings and cookies/logins > Restarted browser (tabs disappeared) > Went through the "first time setup" wizard > Reopened my tabs from saved folder > Then sound control was bugged again when I tried using it

My extensions were enabled at some point in between all of that, but disabling them doesn't work now.

It might be something Opera updates on restart, perhaps with certain nonstandard settings set. Regular tabs are affected. It works correctly in private tabs with the same settings and my usual extensions enabled.

Browserjs is also jank in this version, and has to be disabled on restart for certain sites to function.
