Sod it, I'm out. On what grounds was that request merged with this thread? It was properly written, in the appropriate section and to raise awareness of the situation. A properly formed suggestion or feature request, not a discussion thread (which this is).

As for closing the ads I am able to close it in different OSes, at least on Windows I had no trouble doing it now on a Windows 10 running 20H2. I recorded a little video showing where the X appears to close that section or to be reminded the next day (???).

Interestingly, it seems the section doesn't load right away with the new tab even if it has all of the sites removed from the speed dial. It pops up after a little while (or the machine was running slow because of the recording software, it's also possible).

This is a formal request in case this section is more noticeable for people in a position to do something about it.

When a user decides to opt out of all of the "features" that are bundled with the browser regarding shopping and ads (i.e. Continue shopping and Continue on Booking.com on the new tab, speed dial "suggestions", promotional notifications, promoted speed dials and bookmarks, etc.), it should be abundantly clear that what they want is a clean experience.

They're not interested in any of that, at least I know I'm not, and yet we were shown a 11/11 ad section on new tab and now a Black Friday ad section as well. What is the rationale behind that? Because it's not a fluke.

I take it you earn money or something thanks to it, and I may speak only for myself, but I'm sure as hell not interested in any of those things, to the point that I consider it to be spam, pure and simple.

The funny thing is that you had the balls to bundle an ad blocker with the browser, but it doesn't apply to the browser itself huh? I mean come on guys/gals! Keep the crap out of it FFS, realize you're not the only browser out there, the good things about Opera may not be enough to keep people using it if behavior like this keeps up.

PS. Same could apply to the notifications to use certain features like the screenshot function, Flow, workspaces, messaging in the sidebar, Opera GX, etc. Stop bugging users with those things, you already explain them on first use.

This is not acceptable, I was tempted to write a thread about it when the 11/11 ads appeared in the new tab page, but forgot about it in the end.

When a user expresses their desire not to see this kinds of adds shoved everywhere (new tab, side bar, etc.) by disabling the several options about it within settings, why do you keep forcing things like these? I couldn't care less about them, that's why I chose to disable anything to do with spam in the new tap page.

It only alienates users and with the myriad of alternative browsers out there, why should we stick with Opera when things like these are ignored? Not a single word from the company nor any intention of changing their ways.

Right now, there are a couple of features I'm used to and I like about Opera, but if this keeps up make no mistake, I'll have no trouble adjusting to something else.

While I don't know how many users are like me, or if we're representative in any way of the Opera userbase; but I urge you to listen to your users (I don't even know if anyone in a position to do something about it actually reads this, but what else can users do?).

Re: Basic touchpad navigation gestures.

Not to necrobump that thread I decided to create a new one, but the petition is the same. I am using Opera on Windows and I've looked everywhere but there's no "touchpad/trackpad gestures" section.

When working with a laptop it's quick and easy to get used to swiping across the trackpad left or right with 2 fingers to go backwards or forwards in the tab history. I think it's something that should be too complicated to implement and would make the life of laptop users that much easier.

You don't even need to keep the previous page cached if you don't want to (although that kind of "preloading" would be nice), just the way to add a shortcut to back and forward for 2 finger horizontal swipes.

Note that the 2 finger vertical swiping for scrolling is something that comes native in the OS already (even on Linux), the horizontal one feels just as natural.

Paraphrasing pxtechhelp answering a question about whether to build a 64-bit binary or a 32-bit one:

It depends on what you're trying to do. If you have a program that will never reach the limits of 32-bit CPU's then you won't necessarily see any benefits of building for a 64-bit CPU, and depending on the CPU and OS, you might actually see a degradation in performance (as was the case in the early days of 32-bit emulation on 64-bit CPU's), but with modern cores and OS's, this is largely a non-issue for the "average" program (save the fact that you can't access more than 4GB of RAM).

However, if you have a project that would consume massive amounts of memory (like a web-browser), or need to do calculations for very large sets of numbers (like 3D calculations), then you will most certainly see a benefit in the fact that you can address more than 4GB of RAM or larger resolution numbers for your 64-bit build.

Regarding Opera on itself, while it's not built requiring certain instruction sets (e.g. SSE4, AVX2, etc.) there are parts of the browser that make use of those instructions if your processor supports them. Except for SSE2, the 64-bit variant has more portions with newer instructions, making it faster broadly speaking (newer instructions can make several things at once).

So... the 64-bit build should perform better, even if the memory consumption were higher (didn't check, it could be negligible). As for the 4GB limit, I doubt you'd hit it even in 32-bits because Opera uses several processes when running and each could address 4GB.

They appear in opera://crashes, in that screenshot only the last one has an ID, the other 3 seem to be discarded

Could it be that the source of the crash was the same so it's done not to have many reports of the same thing? I have no idea how to get more info on the crashes.

They aren't closed when they're suspended, tabs remain opened, but unloaded from memory.

The default is 1h without activity for tabs to be suspended, customizable from 20 seconds to 2 weeks, but you could choose to never suspend them even and just have the extension installed to be able to restore sessions.

After logging in I had all of the bookmarks from before and also those synced. Let's see if anyone more experienced know what happened and whether there's a way to restore the previous ones or they're lost.

Could it be something on your end @mrfreeze68? I can access that site over here, have you checked if the same happens with other browsers?

It could be @donq, maybe the dev team already know of the problem and a fix is in the works.

I don't mind much about being unable to restore the session natively because of that extension, but it's always bothersome when things crash.

Oh... were your bookmarks synced to the account or local? I'm not singed in so all of my bookmarks are local, but I just checked and after signing in synced bookmarks were merged with local ones (at least those in the bookmarks bar, I didn't test for the rest).

Are you trying to get the previous bookmarks back? It may be impossible if they were overwritten, they're stored in this file: %AppData%\Opera Software\Opera Stable\Bookmarks.

And the default options for bookmarks, search engines and extensions are listed here %AppData%\Opera Software\Opera Stable\default_partner_content.json

As far as I know the default bookmarks on the Speed Dial are region dependent @thegeneral, e.g. the ones in Spain differ from those in the States.

Hi, I have been running into crash reports recently since the update to the current stable build, 68.0.3618.63. While some do state a crash ID next, others are seemingly discarded.

For example, take a look at the following screenshot:

Why is that? There are no events logged in the Event Viewer related to those crashes, I couldn't find additional info on them either. I have "Automatically send crash reports to Opera" and telemetry enabled via "Help improve Opera by sending feature usage information" enabled to help shape the browser future.

Hi @markreijerman, I've been coming across some forced closings as well of recent as well and I have yet to find the cause. For me it happens since the update to the current stable version (68.0.3618.63) and the only time I found it happening myself I was going across tabs with Ctrl+Tab.

There are similarities between our cases, I also keep a couple dozens tabs opened for later and I am also unable to restore the previous session. I'm not running out of RAM, there's plenty to be used still, but I don't know how much were Opera processes using when the crashes occur.

However there is a way you can restore the session, albeit making use of an extension from the Chrome Web Store. It's called The Great Suspender, I use it to suspend unused tabs after a while since I may take some time to get to them to save resources. That extension also allows you to save sessions for later use, and the useful thing for the current state, restore previous sessions (handles windows as well in case you have more than one).

For me it's a usual addition, but you may give it a shot while they fix whatever problem there is in Opera, it has saved me a couple of times in the past week.

OP's question was answered, but I think @ljfried would appreciate the way to do it @leocg haha.

Anyway, if you open the bookmarks manager (e.g. via Ctrl+Shift+B) you'll find the "Import/Export..." button at the bottom left part of the tab.

As per the current FAQ, custom search engines (those added by the user and not bundled by default with Opera) can't be selected as the default engine to use.

I'd like to request it for consideration in a future release, I find it to be useful and not at all complex to implement. In the same line, it would also be nice if we could delete default search engines or at least change their keywords so that we can use keywords assigned by default for alternative search engines.

I think you may run into compatibility issues with several websites nowadays, that's a Feb. 2016 release and things have changed quite a bit since then .

I am amazed it took so long for us to know what the purpose of Opera Browser Assistant is and that nobody from the company actually stepped in to explain what it does. Although since it seems to be related to tracking, surreptitiously installed and there's no switch for it in the browser settings I'm not surprised.

I wonder, what is wrong with giving users a choice and being transparent? I take it they'd want to have more market share, but I bet disregarding users does the opposite. And not only this business of the Browser Assistant, the constant pushing of Opera GX and icons in the sidebar (even though you have chosen not to be shown those messages again) or the removal of privacy oriented features (e.g. Do Not Track) doesn't help either.

Aaaaanyway, I digress, I came to find out what the thing was and now that I know more or less what it's about I decided to block it. I'd rather have a native option to opt-out of the assistant, but there are several options when you want to prevent program executions without 3rd party software:

• What @burnout426 said, either via GPOs for those using Windows Pro+ or through that registry key; but that way the blockage applies to programs started from Explorer, I don't know if it'd work for the assistant.
• Blocking access to the path where the program is through the permission settings, you could remove the writing or execution permission from "C:\Program Files\Opera\assistant" or the executables that are in there; but if the browser or the installer relies on having access to those locations in this case may through errors.
• Use AppLocker or Windows Defender Application Control to define rules to block it, but that's not for everyone.

I will be circumventing its execution more or less (because anything running as admin could deter it) instead of blocking it making use of a mechanism Windows has to debug applications. Knowing the program names all that needs to be done is create a registry entry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options and set a Debugger value pointing somewhere else.

Since we want to block the assistant it should look like this (I'm also adding one for assistant_installer.exe for good measure):

After that it wouldn't matter if the assistant were set to execute on boot, whatever program you put in there would be executed instead. There are a couple of caveats:

• The Opera installer, if run with admin privileges, could check that key and delete it...
• And if it does, depending on what you choose to run instead, you may not know realize the assistant is running again.
• It blocks any program with that name regardless of where it is, so if you had another program with the same name it would also be blocked.
• Just like with the option to block access via permissions, if the installer or the browser itself expects the assistant to do something it may throw errors.

I'm uploading a registry file for easy use, along with some instructions and the program I'll be running instead (along with its source). It's a dummy program, it does nothing except returning the value 0 to whomever executed it because it's the usual return value for when things go according to plan, just in case.
