I wanted to provide feedback on the product, not the forum. Thank you for moving it to another forum.

I'm reporting a bug: When the new feature, a floating video player that follows you everyone, is on (which it is by default, rather than introducing the new feature and showing what it can do for you and asking if you want it), the new feature blocks entry into the URL bar. As a result, whenever you go on Youtube, where you play videos, and press Ctrl+T, you can no longer do a search engine search, reopen a playlist, or revisit a bookmark.

I'm also reporting negative feedback for new features being default on. Ask users.

Most users don't like floating popups that hover over your stuff. The project managers did not take a poll for this new feature. There are other things being done to Opera that keeps pushing me to abandon Opera after 20 years, but they are not on this topic.

This is why we don't like auto-updates. You break things.

You make a browser. We press Ctrl+T to websearch something or whichever reason. You put the video player in a tiny window following us around, as if to question our action to open a new tab. Are you sure you want to produce a browser with multiple tabs then? Insane.

This would be fine if only the URL bar accepted input, such as typing "you" to open another Youtube tab, or "face" to open a new Facebook tab. But no. URL completion is thwarted by the Opt-Out feature added by You.

So you've made us hate the new feature you added already. Is there an option? How do I turn it off? Do I have to turn it off Again, when you force another update on me? (Another _Opt-Out feature -- from which you cannot opt out...)

Seriously, do you want 20-years faithful users to stop using your browser? Why do you do this? Add the option, let us opt in - If We Want.

@leocg The installer wants to install the 64-bit version in Program Files/x86/Opera. I would like to install it in Program Files. Will this prevent data from being transferred? Also, I would like to stop autoupdates until the next time I install another 64-bit version. How do I do that, so that my fix won't be undone the next time a new version is published?

82.0.4227.33 has caused problems for me (there seems to be a memory leak) and I'd like to revert.

I would also like to make it 64-bit, since I have a 64-bit OS. I've been using Opera for 10 years, and this is likely why it's been autoupdating the 32-bit. I don't know why it hasn't offered to switch to 64-bit and import "all my stuff".

Bookmarks are a given. They should be easy to export and import.

I don't use many plugins.

This leaves saved logins, and I want to keep them for convenience. I've updated my passwords as you're supposed to over the years, but may have failed to note one or two changes across a hundred password.

I would also prefer to not have to accept cookies on every site I've visited in 10 years.

I have found the 64-bit version I want to completely replace my current 32-bit version of Opera with. I need no instructions for removal and install, but instructions on how I make 100% the saved logins are read by the installed version.

@leocg Security is about trusting the source and absolutely nothing else. Security experts will learn that someday. All the sites who were trustworthy when they were HTTP were trustworthy then and now, and all the sites who are trustworthy and HTTP now are trustworthy still.

To me, a web browser is a utility that I use to browse the web. If I can't browse the web because of a very recent change after using Opera for 20 years, I will switch utility.

This is a product forum. If this forum can't answer which recent version of the utility stopped browsing all of the web, no-one can. Are you product experts? Do you remember a few months back? Is it unimportant to you? It's not unimportant to those who use forums, wikis, archives, and databases. You know, important stuff.

You don't censor 10% or 20% or 5% of the web completely. That's a severe product flaw in a browser product. Put in a warning. Don't cut off the web. Don't be idiots.

@leocg Obviously a vast number of useful sites are HTTP, and commercial and spam sites such as blogs, social media, and media sites are mostly HTTPS. The useful sites have archives, documentation, technical information, and scientific information. This is not to mention all Wiki sites. The non-commercial sites have many contributors, but few who can switch to HTTPS without breaking all the links to, from, and within them. Meanwhile, any malicious sites be on HTTPS and will link to a file or archive over HTTPS, so that this link protection doesn't protect them at all. Once the file is downloaded, you get the same result.

Quite apart from these facts, there's the question of whether a browser is any good if it can only access part of the web.

Which browser or browser version of Opera do you recommend, to be able to browse the web with it?

@henrikerlandsson The setting, "always use secure connections" was already off, and I turned off the setting, "Protect me from malicious sites" and restarted the browser, but the problem persists.

Clicking the link doesn't work, but right-clicking, copying the link, and pasting it in a new tab works perfectly. This happens across tons and tons of sites and is a fairly recent problem (2 weeks-2 months).

I work in the Retro Computing community and download links must work in the browser. They are never dangerous because they are links to files for retro platforms.

What setting do I change to not be warned of or unable to navigate to http websites? If there is no setting, which is the latest version of Opera that can click http links?

S/what/which. Could I also add that a forum needs an edit option to cut down on excessive replies? And that 2021 will be greater than 2020. HNY

@leocg High RAM usage for inactive tabs is an issue for any web browser, since you often have to have it open while using other RAM-demanding applications - Desktop doesn't throw out unfocused apps like Mobile does. And desktop is where you do your power browsing, Mobile is a chore. Desktop takes 2 seconds.

The problem on Desktop is that whenever something needs to be quickly looked up, we have this monolithic browser loading up. It's in the way - and it hogs GBs of RAM. We could keep it open, and it hogs GBs of RAM. This is not the solution. Loading a 100KB web page shouldn't eat 1/2 or 1/4 of working RAM cos we press Ctrl+T to search something.

I guess I'm looking for GX, some plugin to limit browser RAM usage, or some way of opening a single webpage without opening the browser with all its tabs that I need to keep available for later, and I can't create a tab group bookmark every day of the week.

Tips?

@leocg It's causing the issue of using more RAM than other browsers, true - I'm a senior webdev and that's why I have multiple browsers installed and can compare.

I'm looking for a way to limit RAM usage by Opera. Currently it sits at 0.18GB per tab with 19 tabs inactive and this tab #20. Which is a little high. Currently for Firefox, this average is 0.11 for 4 tabs and for Chrome, currently 0.08 for 10 tabs. Ideally, open but inactive tabs should take an absolute minimum of RAM and force a reload if updated. Can I set latest Opera to work this way?

GX is in Beta. It seems to set a maximum usage, true. With this average, this will force inactive tabs to be truly inactive. Do you recommend it over latest Opera?

With roughly the same number of tabs open, Opera puts RAM consumption at 3.5GB, over 1GB for Chrome and 0.5GB for Firefox.

I close as many tabs as I can before closing Opera, but some tabs remain as pages to revisit in a day or two, such as simple product pages with no video.

Things like an imminent purchase is typical - but: Opera really sticks out like a sore thumb for memory usage. (I once got it on my phone to cut down on mobile data usage, so where's the love for the desktop?)

I can do the Save Bookmarks To Group on the New Tab, but it will be a chore as I'm an active web user. I would prefer to not have a chore for this browser.

Is there a way to limit Opera RAM usage, e.g. set non active tabs to reload, and thereby consume zero KB? Otherwise I'll have to stop using it as default, and I've loved Opera since the start.

@leocg I wrote all that, and you didn't read any of it? You are talking to a web developer. Get with it. Or get someone who can answer for you. This must work. If some built in extension makes Youtube not work, you must fix it. AdBlock is not the cause, I tested this for you. Others might not test at all and just conclude, "oops, Youtube doesn't work. nice knowing you Opera" >> uninstall. Get it?

It may be Google throwing their weight around since it never arose in Chrome, but Mozilla had it in Firefox and they fixed it. The error looks like this:

And it causes a 5 second delay while displaying this error for every video you open from a search, a link, or, well, clicking. Clicking stuff on the web to display them should work in a browser.

This IS a minor inconvenience - for someone who's a webdev and knows to wait it out. Please no "support" type answers, just a "we're aware and we're fixing it" would be good. A browser must work with Youtube. I would very much like to continue using the Opera browser also for Youtube. Upgraded to 70.0 but has been the same for weeks.

I have obviously used Youtube's own worthless support tool to let them know their website isn't working and accusing them of either muscling out competing Chromium browsers or not competent enough to make their site work on the major browsers.

Since Opera 24(?) ages ago, Opera used the normal file associations of the OS.

Now, even though the file extension (normal .readme file in text format), I have to download it, go to Downloads, and double-click it to open in it Opera.

Do file assocations work in the latest Opera? Is there some setting that prevents the normal opening of say, .txt links in the browser?
