Open the properties of Opera shortcut at task bar, desktop, start menu, wherever you start it from. Under target, at the very end after launcher.exe, add --enable-smooth-scrolling. And please let us know if it works for you.
Sometimes sites embed others, while you really want them in a new tab. It would be helpful if, for frames, "open in new tab" would be available from right-click menu.
Copy address should refer to the embedded frame, not the one in the address bar.

Opera 12.17 was released as a security update over 12.16 in April 2014, while Opera Mail 1.0 has not been updated since June 2013. May I assume that it was it not affected by those vulnerabilities?

Leider scheint Opera die Entwicklung der Panels aber ausschließlich auf Erweiterungen von Dritten auslagern zu wollen. Wie es daher um deren Qualität oder Einheitlichkeit bei der Bedienung bestellt sein wird, bleibt abzuwarten. Zudem wird man bei so Sachen wie Bookmarks, Verlauf oder den von dir angesprochenen Notizen jeweils 2-4 Alternativen testen müssen.

Steps to reproduce:
What happens:
qBittorrent adds the torrent and deletes the .torrent file as expected.
But Opera appears red in task bar, and the download list shows "interrupted: virus scan failed" under the file.
What should happen:
The virus scan should complete before qBittorrent or any other program in a similar situation is allowed to access the file.
Suggested solution:
Downloads are named .opdownload while loading. Keep this extension for the virus scan.
what does Yandex have to do with your browsing?
According to this post, Yandex is where Opera sends your browsing activity to check for fraud and malware sites.
The only way to prevent this is to block sitecheck2.opera.com in your firewall or hosts file.

Sometimes it can be difficult to tell the difference between bug and suggestion. This topic required approval, presumably due the links. If suggestion box was better suited, the reviewing moderator would probably have moved it.
I neglected to mention that this not only occurs when you manually append :orig to obtain the original size. Twitter also delivers the :large variant by default when you click on images, resulting in .jpg-large when saving them. There are also many users and sites that post direct links to either :large or :orig. So this should be a common problem.

Add :orig to the URL to view the image in its original resolution:

If you right-click and save that image, the suggested file name becomes CCiZIc-WgAAc9vx.jpg-orig. To turn it into a useful .jpg file, the -orig part of the file extension needs to be manually removed in the "save as" dialog. When saving a larger number of images, this process is very tedious.
I wish Opera would ignore the :orig part by default.

sitecheck2.opera.com obviously belongs to Opera Software ASA.
If another organization is supposed to be involved, who are they? What information does the browser or that Opera server send to them? What is their privacy policy?

EULA and privacy policy, which identical to section 7 of the EULA, can be accessed from Opera menu - About Opera. Opera Installer also requires you to accept them, although most users carelessly skip through this part.
Allow me to point out that properly documenting this phone home functionality, regardless of its purpose, is not a courtesy. Even if Opera is not concerned about the bad press this could generate, failing to do so is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

To enable fraud and malware protection, Opera confirms all visited sites with sitecheck2.opera.com.
Similar to the unique ID for auto-updates, the submission of crash logs, Opera Turbo, Discover, and synchronization features, this needs to be documented in your EULA and privacy policy.
What do you suggest to change it to?
Different color? Start page background? Display the previous one until the tab or page is fully loaded?
After the error occurs, open opera://gpu/ and see problems detected.
Then scroll all the way down to log messages.
