@leocg he knows there are differences, he specifically wants to know what they are. what is their defining characteristics you refer to, and what is the specific "public" that each caters to that you reference.

RE: Browser ExcellencyOpera for Windows
Do you want is to explain how Opera is better than Chrome?
It has several small things that chrome doesn't have. Mouse gestures, tab menu, sidebar for extensions, visual bookmarks, centered images, Opera turbo, discover and many more.-i don't know. i think you'll find that chrome just leaves some of those things to the user to decide, so they can install an extension for that functionality. opera tends to integrate it (ex. mouse gestures). visual bookmarks and sidebar are more a layout thing and a personal taste. i'm not sure what you mean by tab menu? chrome uses tabbed browsing? so i must be a tad ignorant with that phrase(?).
-personally, i find them very similar. and i use both. opera has its own app store, but can use chromes as well. bit opera's apps are all found in chromes (as far as i can see).
-opera has a different updater.
-chrome has some added features that make it a little bigger (i believe). i could be wrong, but nacl and sandboxing, etc.
-chrome always annoys me by adding startup processes to my boot.
-overall very similar. but they used be be more similar a couple of versions ago. i think opera has started trying to implement things the vivaldi browser is offering, to try and take any wind out of their sails before they gain momentum. its a dog fight. will be interesting to see where it goes.

RE: Old problemsOpera for Windows
I use Avast with it running in the background. I have the Pagefile set on a different drive and is system managed. (I will soon be adding a 'boost' stick.) 4 gig of Ram and 2 gig of video Ram. a Dual Core 2.66 intel CPU.
The fault is just random enough to be annoying. Having opera start where I left off does help but sometimes your concentration can be broken and messages can be lost before posting.
Seems to be behaving since I turned my system into a dual monitor system. Weirdrunning in background is ok. i don't recall avast doing a scheduled scan when i used it, but check you settings just in case. and avast has a hardened mode that can cause problems when turned on (by blocking certain processes/programs). i think it is off by default, but peek inside the settings to make sure. avast sometimes has a update checker that might run on a schedule and a net work scan (smart scan?) ... i'd make sure they're not scheduled to auto scan also.
avast sometimes has a large emergency update that runs, seems to be separate from their regular update service. check your avast logs to see if that update occurs when you have problems (unlikely, but worth a look).

RE: Old problemsOpera for Windows
is it possible you have a memory hungry antivirus that likes to run a scheduled scan in the background without your knowledge?

RE: Opera 27 - Speed Dial more like Slow DialOpera for Windows
Try this. Go into your profile folder (you can find its location in About Opera) and find the three files that start with session and delete them.
thanks, it worked. nice and zippy to start now. hope they find the issue and fix it soon, most people won't be bothered to do this.

RE: Opera 27 - Speed Dial more like Slow DialOpera for Windows
my speed dial is taking 45 seconds to load at opera startup (i use it for my opera startup screen). version 28.0.1750.48
i do not have any sites saved to my speed dial, they are blank. and the 45 seconds, that is only for speed dial load, not opera load. opera loads (which i did not time), then comes up with blank white screen, then you wait for 45 seconds, then speed dial appears. ouch. this should be focused on, 'cuz it makes opera unusable to someone who opens and closes their browsers a lot.

RE: Windows XPOpera for Windows
run your browser in sandboxie. and you can use qtweb. my xp laptop is a little sluggish, and i found qtweb fairly light. i never tried pale moon on it though, and might compare the two:)

RE: Is Opera being phased out?Opera for Windows
are you using a flash block extension? or a privacy extension? or ghostery or something?
-
RE: Is Opera being phased out?Opera for Windows
likely turbo causing problems, particularly with flash games. i had those problems with older versions. easiest way to know for sure is to turn it off and see if that fixes your problems.
it is usually wise to use a different browser from your day-to-day browser for banking. or you could try banking software like trusteer rapport and see if opera works then.

RE: Opera Mail for UbuntuSuggestions and feature requests
Opera Mail is basically dead.
thanks, good to hear someone say it (but sad to hear it). i'm using it and like it best, but am concerned with its continued security (it may not have holes to patch yet, but maybe b/c its dead, no ones been looking at it to see it it does have some??? would you suggest users of opera mail to move to an actively developed program? any chance opera mail could be sold or open sourced (so it could be developed)? or does it carry common code from the old browser that makes this impossible?

RE: How to turn off Opera as default browser...Opera for Windows
you can always use winpatrol to monitor these settings and alert you if your default browser has changed. then you can restore it with the press of a button.

RE: Can't uninstall old version of OperaOpera for Windows
i find it easiest to just reinstall it and then uninstall it. the reinstall will hopefully fix whatever is corrupted.

RE: What percentage of people are adapting well to the new Opera?Opera for Windows
@sitka
On cutting distraction from Web Pages, I think the Opera extension Clearly does that. https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/clearly/?display=en
Here's a discussion of Clearly (as a Chrome extension), but since it's been ported to Opera, and I gave you the Opera link, it has the same features, so the discussion may be helpful to you. http://www.techerator.com/2012/01/clearly-chrome-browser-extension-cuts-distractions-from-web-pages/
On the zoom feature you were concerned about, I found a Chrome extension you might like, if you prefer something other than using the keyboard shortcuts. See
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/zoom/lajondecmobodlejlcjllhojikagldgd?hl=en
It gives you a scrolling bar, for zooming, and more.
To download a Chrome Extension, you do need the Opera Extension, Download Chrome extension
https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/download-chrome-extension-9/?display=en
Or Extension Source Viewer
https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/extension-source-viewer?display=en
You can install this, and if you don't like it, uninstall.nice picks:)

RE: Embedded Videos Gone BlackOpera for Windows
this is (in my experiance) usually caused by an extension (a privacy related one). turn off your extensions (one by one) to see who the turd is. or go into the settings of the extension (ex. ghostery) and allow the blocked content that is causing this. i used to have to turn ghostery off to view some things, changing the settings wouldn't even help (was a bug or something, they probably fixed that by now - it was years ago).

RE: What percentage of people are adapting well to the new Opera?Opera for Windows
I don't care what it feels like to you. The company is doing very well whether you like it or not. it's a little early to say their doing pretty well. bloomberg reports they had a first quarter loss in 2014. Link? Their 1Q2014 shows a profit. Their revenue increased 40% over 1Q2013. http://www.operasoftware.com/company/investors/finance
http://investing.businessweek.com/research/stocks/earnings/earnings.asp?ticker=OPERA:NO
-0.12. not +. hover on the link for interpretation.
That minus means a negative from the ANALYST ESTIMATES. They have a profit of .12. If there was a loss, then the bar would be pointing pointing downwards from the zero point with the color being red instead of green.
without getting into this to far (it's off topic and boring), they did not have a first quarter profit. their earnings did not compensate their expenditures. there is an § Adjusted EBITDA of MUSD 22.7 that is burried in opera's cost presentation. this graph highlights it. actual earnings of 0.12 equates to "a negative surprise" for the first quarter of "-75.78%". that is why opera's price fell .6 after this announcement.
the point was, it is still early to say that the new direction will be a profitable one.It may be off topic but you're the one who started this with your incorrect comment "it's a little early to say their doing pretty well. bloomberg reports they had a first quarter loss in 2014."
Theren was NO loss. They had a profit.lol. i see you don't understand the terminology i'm using??? refer to this graph of the first quarter
http://www.bloomberg.com/quote/OPERA:NO
yes, as you point out their revenue is positive. but their net income was close to -20%. since you apparently don't know what that means (since i already posted that graph), i'll explain. revenue is:
"the total amount of money received by the company for goods sold or services provided during a certain time period. It also includes all net sales, exchange of assets; interest and any other increase in owner's equity and is calculated before any expenses are subtracted.
Read more: http://www.investorwords.com/4254/revenue.html#ixzz36j5drn5v
this is "bf expenses". are we clear? before expenses. it doesn't mean they made money. you have to subtract expenses and costs.
net income is close to -20%. now that's a very large negative number.
"In business, what remains after subtracting all the costs (namely, business, depreciation, interest, and taxes) from a company's revenues. Net income is sometimes called the bottom line. also called earnings or net profit.
Read more: http://www.investorwords.com/3247/net_income.html#ixzz36j6FMREQ
so why is their net income negative (yes, losing money, not positive, as in having less then they should)?
i had explained it to you already. this is the second time:
"there is an § Adjusted EBITDA of MUSD 22.7 that is burried in opera's cost presentation." but you didn't read it??? or understand what i was saying??? finally, a comment is not incorrect just because you don't understand it.

RE: uninstall Opera MailOpera for Windows
hmmmm, i hate it when that happens:(
you already said it (and you said it didn't work) ... but i'll say try again ... reinstall it and then uninstall it. try to reinstall from a different source.
when you uninstall, use revo uninstaller (if 32 bit) or Advanced Uninstaller Pro (32 and 64) or wise uninstaller (32 and 64). they will scan for left overs to remove for you.
or use wise registry cleaner (advanced uninstaller pro also has a registry cleaner in it). scan system and look only for entries that say opera mail or something. only select them to delete. make a retore point first (you can make a registry back up with these two registry cleaners first/also).
one more possiblity: since opera mail is in opera presto. perhaps if you install the browser and uninstall it, it will remove the mail parts for you. this might get you around the problem you're having with reinstalling the mail program.
