thank you for all of this - I'm a "low" tech guy but I'll try to do all of this - does it make any sense that only the New York Times pages are affected and does it make any sense that this should have happened so suddenly?

@ljfried @ljfried I have been having the same issue since yesterday. I regularly clear my cookies and history and do not have any extensions and have not been able to find a fix yet. This is happening across my devices and only in Opera (I use Air). NYT works fine in Chrome, Safari, and the app. It does seem to be a specific Opera issue. The article loads and in 1 second disappears.
I have everything synced across my devices, but this does not work well in Opera. Only bookmarks sync, not history.
NYT does note that the preferred viewing browsers are Chrome, Safari, and Firefox. Strangly the Help Center on NYT loads fine in Opera - https://help.nytimes.com/4403549704468-Web-troubleshooting.
Further the NYT landing page loads, it is only the articles that do not load. I was able to logout and log back in on NYT by using the help page, but that did not make a difference either. So I will be using Chrome and the app in the meantime and continue to check Opera, which I suspect needs a patch. -

thank you very - just not sure why this has happened so suddenly - did the NY Times do something to their website?

@Loquality Thanks I disabled the Opera ad blocker and the nyt now workers. I don't like ads and if the ads increase I'll go back to Safari. Not a word from Opera or nyt. Rather disappointing.

@DocMLorenzoM can you explain to me -- as simple as possible!! -- how I disable the Opera ad blocker? Thank you.

SO, it turns out you need to turn off Opera's ad blocker. Oddly, unlike other sites, the NYTimes does not pop up a notice to turn off adblockers.
And to get around the painfully intrusive adds, use Opera's built in reader mode. (at the right in your search bar.) Now someone give me back the hours I have wasted trying to figure this out.

@ljfried I would guess that it is a new update by the NYT. Many websites have been adding features that will disable content if certain adblockers are detected.
As for disabling the blocker, there is a little shield in the website bar at the far right, between a camera and an arrow. Click on it and turn off "block ads".
