I like to use the url
      https://encrypted.google.com/webhp?hl=en&safe=off&output=search&tbs=qdr:y
for my searches. It forces Google to sort results by date. But it's awkward to include with every search. Is it possible to substitute it in the code that drives the bar?

You can add it as a new search engine and give it a letter so you can search from the address bar with it but you can't make it the default search engine at this time. Maybe in a future release.

The search bar in SD can't be changed.

Ah, the speed dial. I missed the title, my mistake.

Lando242, thanks for the hint. Now I have to find how to name a new search engine. Speed dial would be nice but address bar will do.

Alt+P > Search > Manage search engines > Add new search. That should get you started.
