If Opera broke after opening a Google News link, it’s usually a corrupted profile or cached file. First, restart Opera and try clearing the cache. If it still crashes, launch it with flags disabled (opera.exe --no-sandbox --disable-extensions) to see if an extension is the cause. If it opens, turn extensions off one by one. If nothing helps, rename your Opera profile folder so Opera creates a fresh one, or reinstall the browser completely. Your bookmarks and passwords will sync back if you were logged in.

@stateofreality I've now switched phones to a pixel 10 pro fold and the issue still remains, so whatever broke, broke badly

@stateofreality said in tried to open a google news link and now opera is completely broken:

i tried to open a link to an article about gaming, now opera is completely broken, tried uninstalling the app, didn't work, cleared everything, didn't work, restarted the phone, didn't work, i have no idea what broke but i literally cannot use the browser on my phone at all now

              android 16
              google pixel 8 pro 256gb
              version 92.0.4866.85599
don't have the link that caused it and cant even check cause i can't access the browser
              data savings is off
here's a link to a video of the problem https://youtube.com/shorts/smzDX_j4pLQ?feature=share
tried to open a google news link from the feature on my pixel 8 pro, it tried to load then just stopped, i closed the browser and reopened to try and get it to maybe refresh and now the browser just doesn't work, I've reinstalled the app, cleared cache, restarted the phone, the only thing i haven't done is reset the phone which I'm not doing
expected behavior is that the app works, which it currently doesn't

Sounds like Opera’s WebView or profile data got corrupted try Settings → Apps → Opera → Storage → Clear storage (not just cache) and also update/clear Android System WebView & Chrome, then reboot.
If it still fails, it’s likely an Opera bug on Android 16/Pixel 8 Pro report it with the video and temporarily switch to Chrome/Firefox until a fix rolls out.

@stateofreality I preferred downgrading Opera, still better than Chrome to me

@stateofreality That's frustrating - sounds like Opera got into a corrupted state somehow. Since you've already tried the usual fixes (reinstall, clear cache, restart), here's what I'd suggest:
Try installing Opera Beta or Opera GX as a temporary alternative - see if those work. If they do, it's definitely an issue with the stable version's data on your device.
If that doesn't work, you might need to use ADB to force-stop and clear all Opera data at a system level, including any hidden cache folders that a regular uninstall misses.
Alternatively, just switch browsers temporarily - Chrome, Firefox, or Brave while Opera sorts itself out.
I work with 514 Digital and we've seen similar issues with apps getting into weird states after trying to load problematic content. Sometimes a factory reset is the nuclear option, but honestly, just using a different browser might be easier at this point.
Have you tried reaching out to Opera's support directly with that video? They might have a specific fix for Android 16 issues since it's relatively new.

@stateofreality I contacted Opera, and they said it would be fixed, but it never was. I got tired of waiting, so I’ve decided to stop using Opera. If possible, I’d like to close this thread.
