      Opera indeed has casting support.

I'm starting to seriously suspect that it doesn't. I'm now convinced that when I said earlier that I had got it to work - that ONE time - that I was mistaken and was actually using Chrome and got confused. Every single time it works in Chrome, and it never works in Opera.

Can anyone think of anything else? Could they be blocking it in Opera in different countries or something? I have tried all manner of restarts and timing of turning on my TV with laptop, my extensions are not running, I've tried all sorts of wifi sign-ins (my understanding is that casting works direct from device to device anyway) and not starting Chrome in case it is over-riding it in Opera. Never works. Not once. The options don't even pop up. Right click->cast doesn't even appear. Casting button in a video doesn't even appear.
Every time it works in Chrome

Years ago I spent AGES trying to get it working in Opera on my Win10 machine and eventually gave up - and it worked perfectly on Chrome
So now I have a brand new laptop. BRAND FREAKING NEW, different brand of laptop, different windows (11), everything is up to date - Windows, Opera. And EXACTLY the same thing happens.
But it works perfectly in Chrome.

The prospect of it not being supported in Opera and there is just a conspiracy out there saying that it does is looking seriously likely to me, because this is just &^%$ing ridiculous. It's simply not possible.

@simongwgtn I remember that Chromecast used to not be supported in some places due to licensing issues, don't know if it's still valid.

@simongwgtn In your “Local State” file, what are the values for “country” and “country_from_server”. They might have to be set to “US” and the language in Opera might have to be set to English (United States) for things to work.

Hi, thanks. Had a look, LocalState file was set to NZ where I am. I backed up the file, changed both Country and Server to US but it kept changing it back. Set my VPN to an obscure server in the US, changed LocalState file to US and it stuck (restarting between all of these). Couldn't find a "Language" setting there. Didn't work, of course.
And....you guessed it, casting (Youtube) worked fine in Chrome, even with my laptop VPNed in another country and TV not.

I'm gonna Report A Bug. If I don't get a sensible answer then....bye bye. It's a pity because I like Opera and it has some useful features. I believe it is owned by an evil country anyway so might actually be a good idea getting rid of it.

@simongwgtn They usually don't reply to bug reports, unless they need more information to fix the problem.

If I don't get a response then I will leave. I'm already half way out the door. I also don't want all my passwords etc. in the hands of the CCP.

Sorry. For that I meant at the URL opera://settings/languages in the UI where "English (United States)" is at the top of the list and when you click the 3 dots next to it, "Display Opera in this language" is checked.

Not sure if that will help though, even in addition to the Local State changes.

You can see if things work fine in a test standalone installation to rule out issues with your Opera settings and data etc.

You can also test in Opera Developer and Opera GX (via test standalone installations if you want). You can download the installers for them at https://www.opera.com/download. Maybe it's an issue only the stable version of Opera One.

Consider that it might be a Chromecast licensing issue where Opera is obligated to restrict access to the function in certain locales while Chrome is not, where even the workarounds I suggested are not enough.

Give Vivaldi a shot. Might be good to test Chromecast in it anyway for comparison.
