I'm sure there was an option I chose when going through all the settings for this when I installed Opera. But I want to change it now. Where is the setting which used to be called "Open new tabs in the foreground"?

@hucker There isn't such setting, but usually middle click works.

@leocg There's a lot of basic things missing from Opera. They add more and more features and never finish them off before starting the next one.

You'd think with an update every 5 seconds (what are we on now, version 150? Don't they realise you could use 17.4?) they'd have solved all the problems in the universe by now.

What is "middle click"? I wasn't aware this was a thing in windows. I've programmed my middle button to de a delete key using xmouse. Are you telling me there is a standard middle click function? No other program uses a third button. Before I programmed it into xmouse I got some weird scroll symbol then the scroll worked by moving the mouse, some kinda scroll lock I didn't like. Why would this function tell Opera to open a tab in the foreground?

@hucker Middle click means to click on the link using the middle mouse button.

@leocg Yes I know what it means, but since the windows default is to auto-scroll with middle click, how can this work?

@hucker middle click on a link is the key. It's been there for decades already.

@leocg I wouldn't expect middle click to do anything but autoscroll, since that's what windows defaults to using it as. And as I've said, I changed mine to the delete key. Therefore if I middle click a link in Opera, nothing happens. Also you're the first person to ever mention a middle click in windows. It's a linux thing. So are you saying this is something in Opera? Because I've not heard of it in any other app? It doesn't seem to be widely publicised. What exactly does it do? Presumably more than just "open this in the foreground".

Actually I'm right clicking to choose "open in new tab" - this is what I need to change to open in a foreground tab. So middle clicking is of no use here, I'm right clicking to get the context menu.

In fact I'm sure I remember (very recently, in the last few weeks), seeing an Opera setting called something like "open new tabs in the back/foreground", but I can't find it.

Opera doesn't have any settings for this, but you can use modifier keys when clicking on a link to change behavior.

For example, ctrl + left-click on a link opens the link in a background tab and ctrl + shift + left-click opens it in a foreground tab. (Shift + left-click opens it in a new window).

Dragging the link to the tab bar should open it in the foreground too.

Holding down the right mouse button on a link and dragging down and releasing will open the link in a new foreground tab. If you want it in a background tab instead, do down and then up.

Also, as said, middle-clicking a link should open the link in a new tab and should do so in just about any browser (assuming you don't change the default behavior for the middle button in your mouse config settings). This has indeed been a well-known thing for ages. As for whether middle-clicking on a link opens it in the foreground or the background and whether a modifier key changes that behavior depends on the browser.

Also, with https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/classic-tabs/ installed, you can force links opened in a new tab to be automatically focused.

@burnout426 If I right click, let go of the button, then choose "open in new tab", it opens a background tab. If I hold onto the button, there is no menu to click on. Are you talking about a gesture? I think I turned them off because they were activating at random.

Anyway, the extension works great, thanks! Opera is getting like Microsoft, removing our preferences!

@hucker Yes, I was talking about gestures for the right-click, hold, drag down and release or down and up and release.
