Hi, since last update, every time i right click from task bar to open a private window, it won't load and freezes till i forced quit. But if i open opera and create a new private window, it works without problem.

      Any solution for this?

Regular Opera (Opera One) or Opera GX?

What version as seen at the URL opera://about?

        What version of Windows?

@andrew84 Thanks for the clarifications. I can't reproduce it with 108.0.5067.29 on Windows 11 23H2. I right-click Opera's pinned taskbar icon while Opera is closed and choose "New private window". A new private window opens no problem and doesn't hang or anything.

@burnout426 I have only Portable Stable version. After pinning the 'opera.exe' from folder on my Desktop to the taskbar, it doesn't show extra options like 'New Private Window'.
So I can check it only for installed Developer version, there it works correctly without the freezing.

I have the same issue, opening up a private window directly from the taskbar shortcut hangs/freezes. Opening a private window from within Opera works fine. Windows 11 Insider 22635.3720, Opera 110.0.5130.66

I have the same issue with Opera One as well as Opera GX and I was able to locate, what at least I think is, the reason to it - mainly if I go to "Setting" -> "Advanced synchronization settings" and disable there the synchronization of the settings, I am able to initially start Opera GX in private mode without any problems, but I do not know why it is so...

@marri This solves the problem, but i can't disable it cause i use it in more than one pc and i need the sync on. Anyway i started to open private tabs after launch it, since it's been months of updates without a solution...

@marri Disabling the sync solves the problem. However, I need sync on since I'm using more than one computer with Opera installed.

I agree with you both - this problem is present for quite a few months and no fix is to be seen...
Unfortunately, there are two options - one, there is some particular corrupted setting, which cause Opera to fail to start in private mode, or two, the synchronization itself is corrupted.
In the first case, simply changing one setting would be sufficient to fix it (but which one is creating this synchronization error?) and in the second case, disabling the synchronization is the only option for now (and let's be hones, how often do you change your Opera setting? - I personally set everything as I desire and stay with it, but I understand that some may not be as steady with it as I am).

@marri Interesting to note that launching private mode from the taskbar hangs whereas launching it from within the browser works fine. Seems that sync needs the normal mode first, then works in private as well. Anyway, not a big issue for me but rather a convenient option to have to avoid the extra step. Hopefully somebody we'll pay attention and we'll get it back in the next build(s).

With Opera 111.0.5168.25 64-bit, with Sync enabled (syncing everything), on Windows 11 23H2, while Opera is closed, when I right-click Opera's pinned taskbar icon and choose "New private window", Opera opens in private mode and everything is fine. No freezing or anything.

Few things you can test though. One would be to disabling just syncing of settings instead of disabling Sync altogether to test if that helps.

                                There other would be:

While Opera is closed, hit Windows key + r to open the run dialog, type cmd and press enter to open a command prompt.

                                Then, type:

                                cd "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Opera"

and press enter to get to Opera's install folder (assuming you used the default current-user install in the installer's options).

                                Then, type:

                                opera --private --enable-logging --v=1

and press enter to start Opera.

When Opera freezes, you can kill it however you usually do (and hit ctrl + c in the command prompt to kill the logging if needed). Then, you can type:

                                notepad "%AppData%\Opera Software\Opera Stable\opera.log"

and press enter to open the log file in Notepad.

You can then look through the log file (might be long) to see if there's anything interesting in there as to why Opera froze).

@burnout426 I have tested disabling just syncing of settings - when I turn that particular one off, without changing anything else, it starts without any problems. Overall, interesting idea, but one does need specific skills to read log files, which I personally do not posses.

@burnout426 I've followed the guide and got some errors in the cmd prompt when Opera launched (see below) and saw some runtime warnings in the log file. I also saw a bunch of invalid rules referring to websites? The log file is 760 lines long so I'm not sure if I can spot the problem with my untrained eye.

The cmd errors you posted are probably not related.
