@leocg But can I remove the VPN button from the space to the left of the search bar?

@modemjunkie Disabling it in settings should also remove the icon in address bar.

@leocg Leo, what I don't understand is why was the Speed Dial button removed?
It wasn't hurting anyone or causing any problem to anyone, so why remove it?
It just seems a pointless thing to do, and has really pissed off a considerable number of people.

Well, I had a breakthrough and figured it out. When you start, Opera, you go to your start page. Pin that tab and it shrinks and becomes effectively a start page button.

@greenpalmer-0 Since the other Opera desktop browsers also don't have it, maybe Opera wanted to align with them? Maybe the button is not used that much? Don't know.

@cpking nope, that won't do it. If you navigate to a different page from there...the subsequent page becomes pinned.

@leocg they all had it until this update. So far the only solution seems to be to go back to a previous version.

@kevdotkrizzle Opera GX never had a "Speed Dial" button. Not sure about Opera Crypto but it's probably the same.

@leocg said in Speed dial button missing:
Opera Crypto
really? this whole thread of upset Opera users and you picked out the word "all" in my last post to prove some kind of point? Opera Crypto does have it and whatever the hell iteration of "regular" Opera that I've been using has had one until this recent update. This is not difficult or worthy of debate. put the home button (Speed Dial Button) back geesh.

I posted (here, I think) about a solution that completely evaded me. If you pin the start page tab, it shrinks to a start page/speed dial button. For my version of Opera, at least, this is a highly workable solution.
[EDIT: It was (correctly) pointed out to me that this method pins whatever URL you choose in speed dial. Damn, thought I had it...]

I did see where you can add speed dial to the side bar. Not at all intuitive, but at least there's that...

I'm pretty sure the icon will return as a toggle in settings.
Considering all the other options Opera keeps alive, such as a separate Search field in address bar.
What does that do? It's performs identically to a search inside the URL field. But they still make room for it in settings.

@kevdotkrizzle I was just trying to explain what I meant in my post that you've replied to.

Why remove something that has been a way of life for most of us for 20 + years ? I do not understand

I'm getting the impression that the Opera dev team are starting to adopt the same attitude as MS "We know best and users will do as we say".
This change is just creating extra work as now I have to close old tabs and open a new one to get speed dial, before I just hit the button in a tab that was no longer relevant.
