Lost My Opened Tabs

Thanks for the reminder about Vivaldi. I see it's run by ex Opera people, open, etc., it's pretty good so far. Also available on Linux, hopefully I can get it working there as well as win10. -

Well, just made the switch to Vivaldi. Got all bookmarks in (easy), and migrated all tabs. Only thing I miss is having workspaces on a vertical sidebar instead of on top bar, but the bookmarks more than make up for it. Overall, a very 'Opera' feel to it. Certainly more familiar to me than Firefox or Chrome (Shudder).Odd thing: once signed into Vivaldi, my open YT creator page in Opera logged me out, and I can't get back in, but as I'm in with Vivaldi, and am done with Opera, no worries.
Uninstalling Opera now.Bye guys, thanks for 20+ ish years of happy browsing, sorry you're hellbent on Ensh!ttification.
Good luck with your new 'strategy', you're gonna need it.

For my use cases, vivaldi is doing the job well enough.Take a look at the sidebar. There is an icon "Windows" ("Fenster" in german) and there you can access your workspaces. Ok, it is not as smart as opera in this case, but it works and if your monitor is wide enough, there should be no problem

After eight years in existence Vivaldi hasn‘t managed to get more than a stagnating 2.4m users. They once said, they needed at least 5m to become profitable. That’s giving me a pause to think.
Opera is being used by more than 300m people and even Brave, roughly as old as Vivaldi, is having 50m users.
As a matter of fact, although it may be praised by loyal users, it hardly hasn’t any real world impact though. One might regret it, but that’s the way it is. -

@celticcross 100% irrelevant to me. I can continue to use a browser that randomly nukes my tabs (which are essential to my job) or I can use Vivaldi. I'll give V a go, if it poops the bed I'll reluctantly to go Firefox.
So far V hasn't wiped my tabs, which suggest their devs might just give a crap about their users, more than I can say about O.

@beorn1 Same here, I'm quite happy with Vivaldi right now, it's the next best thing if you want something similar to Opera.
It has a different approach on some of it's features, but the level of customization makes up for it, to adjust it to my needs.
And most importantly, it hasn't nuked my tabs either. -

@mixchild I guess you mean "one workspace"?.
However I experienced the same at least once with the latest three Opera One releases (currently version 102.0.4880.33 on Windows 11 Home), that all tabs of the last opened workspace where wiped out at starting the first browser window.
It seems that Opera does not properly distinguish between the first opened window and any further "New Window", which is opened with empty workspaces, except one speed dial tab.
According to my settings the first browser window should be opened with my last tab configuration. Occasionally it works that way but in most cases it still starts by displaying an additional speed dial window and not the last opened tab, consequently overriding my setting not to "Display the start page first". And once in a while it starts the last opened workspace empty with only the start page, treating the workspace as if it was part of a "New Window".But what Opera does when starting the first window is totally unpredictable. I do not use islands and I always close Opera the same way and I get all 3 possibilities on startup as described above, no idea how to reproduce them:
- correct start (no tab loss, displaying the last opened tab)
- start without tab loss but with start page first
- start with complete tab loss in last opened workspace with start page only

start with complete tab loss in last opened workspace with start page onlyI have to add a fourth possibility to this list, it happened just a few minutes ago:
- correct start (no tab loss, displaying the last opened tab)
- start without tab loss but with start page first
- start with complete tab loss in last opened workspace with start page only
- start without tab loss but with start page first in the last opened workspace, but complete tab loss at another workspace with start page only (only one workspace affected)
Wow, a completely new feature: randomized bug symptoms.

Lost all my 100+ tabs in 8 workspaces! And what did I do to deserve this? I closed the last tab in one of the workspaces. Everything gone! And is there, at least, an option to avoid closing the window on closing the last tab? Of course not.
How difficult is it to understand that users of browsers kind of like to Kwwp The Tabs!!!

Same here, but I lost tabs in one workspace only. MacOS Ventura 13.5.2. Opera: 102.0.4880.56. Infuriating.

I've been using Vivaldi browser on both my machines (Win10 and Linux Mint), and it's great! Many thanks to the poster above who recommended it. The one thing that was driving me around the bend was the implementation of workspace icons (I wanted to keep them like Opera's = vertical on the left side). Happily, this is fixable. A bit tricky / wonky, but quite doable, And I can now customise them, which is actually better than Opera. Here's a vid link to give you a sense:
https://vivaldi.com/blog/how-to/pawel-shows-you-how-to-play-with-workspaces-and-custom-icons-in-vivaldi/BTW, the only site that Vivaldi doesn't open for me is this one.
Odd that, eh?
Anyway, give it a go. I haven't regretted it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivaldi_(web_browser)
Quote Although intended for general users, it is first and foremost targeted towards technically-inclined users as well as former Opera users disgruntled by its transition from the Presto layout engine to a Chromium-based browser that resulted in the loss of many of its distinctive features.[16][18] Despite also being Chromium-based, Vivaldi aims to revive the features of the Presto-based Opera with its own proprietary modifications.[19][20]
As of April 2023, Vivaldi has more than 2.4 million active users.

@leocg Not true. There's a long history of this issue when Opera is used on MacBooks going back to February. Workspaces nor tabs are saved making the workspace feature worthless. Basically if you have to close the browser, you start from scratch when you re-open it. If you had 40 tabs open. Sorry, they are lost. And yes, I do have the options set to re-open the previous session of Opera. Thank goodness Brave and other browsers can re-open sessions. I'm losing hope that it will ever be fixed for Opera with MacBooks.
I fail to understand the logic of coming up with new features, such as workspaces and not having them support MacBooks.

@marqm I agree, you provided accurate information for the high frustration we are all experiencing with sessions being lost. I for one will leave Opera. If they can't get this right, what else doesn't work right regarding my security. It does make me wonder. No way did this browser go through any QA with any Macbook.
I'm personally fed up with new updates of anything that either cause issues or break a product. I have a long list of software junk that I've abandoned. Guess this product will be next on my list.
This problem was reported back in February. Obviously there is no desire to fix it.

Atleast give an option to enable that will keep a backup of all tabs and info in my opera profile or in my flow. This happened to me today, all my workspace tabs are lost.

@shubhr0 I can't believe this is still unfixed. Actually I can. Over the last few years I've seen this same show-stopping contempt for users from Dropbox (who deleted all the files in my DB folder, then denied any responsibility; surreal. They moved 1tb of my data off my HD and onto their cloud 'for my convenience). Took me ages to redownload all the files and to reinstall my custom icons. But it only took me 3 minutes to cancel my monthly subscription, haha).
Same with Adobe, another sub canned after a studio-killer 'update' that crashed PS every time I tried to open an image. Many people affected, I bailed on Adobe then and used an older version of the app that I own (CS6). That same pattern of "we couldn't be bothered to fix this". If the problem affects 1% or 2% of the users, those % are screwed. The loss of $500 a year from me and the other users doesn't bother them apparently.
I've been using Vivaldi since late August as mentioned above, it's great. No regrets.

I'll add my story from 11th Nov 2023 (today). So I only have 16 GB of RAM on a Win 10 computer and my Opera regularly goes to 5-8 GB of memory usage, and essentially the computer becomes too sluggish to use (the memory use of browsers is a different topic altogether). Anyhow I have been using Opera for a few years, originally moved from Firefox because Firefox kept losing my tabs (ironic now!) and I also loved the Workspaces feature. Not a big fan of tab islands but I adapted.
Today I closed Opera when it was taking 5.7 GB of RAM and my RAM usage was somewhere in the 90%+. I had refreshed a couple of tabs on my current workspace just before I closed. Closing took a minute or so. Upon reopening Opera, I was greeted with the "new Opera version" sound and logo (I hate it, btw, especially at night when I'm trying to be quiet). And my workspace which used to have 100+ tabs now only had four tabs - two tabs that I remember having refreshed in the last hour or so, an empty tab (not sure why - I do have "Display the start page first" enabled though, maybe that's it), and the "Opera has updated" tab. The Opera version is/was 104.0.4944.36 but after the update it downloaded .54 - why it couldn't download that directly I don't know...
Previously I have been using Opera without any tab loss. I run my computer 24/7 and restart Opera (and only Opera) maybe once a week or every two weeks because of the memory issue. No problems ever before. But now it seems the problem described in this thread has come to ruin my day. I'm guessing this was a combination of whatever bugs exist regarding tabs, and perhaps a memory issue if that's also some rare known issue, AND Opera updating its version. I haven't used Tab Suspender but sounds like I should!
So yeah, 100+ tabs lost. In fact I remember the count upon "Really quit Opera" being around 1467, and now when I closed again when I was attempting to do some manual session restore stuff, it was 1348 tabs. So yeah, 119 tabs gone. Great. And of course trying to fix the sessions manually didn't work, somehow Opera gets the tabs from somewhere else than Sessions or already corrupted the bigger Tabs file.
For what it's worth, considering my experience, the vast majority of users probably don't encounter the tab issues at all. I was like that until today. I have not been able to replicate my issue again (and fingers crossed I never will). So whatever is going on is not quite as simple as Opera always losing the tabs as described here - there's some variables at play. No idea what those could be. My only extensions are a defunct crypto thing called Keplr and Bookmark All Tabs (which can only bookmark the current workspace, of course). No major settings changes.
Fingers crossed this is my only post here. I do like the workspaces and the floating video player, and those will keep me as an Opera user unless the tabs start disappearing more often.

@anotheruselessposter This is very painful. So sorry. After my loss that I described above, I started using the Session Buddy addon. I hope it will help me if I encounter this kind of issue again.

that doesn't work, "keep tabs from...." i have that set and have 4 workspaces with 20 tabs each. it's a hassle and time wasted to keep going into history to find those tabs or even to save as dial folder. time is important.
