is it possible to configure opera to show favicons on small tabs like other browsers do?

Only if you pin the tab afaik.

That's true, thanks. Pinned tabs could help a bit to keep oversight with many tabs, if they would not move to the first position. The usability with many tabs was much better in Opera 12.
