I can't believe this hasn't been fixed yet. Why can't we have some of the logic of Firefox here?

@leocg The problem is if I'm in FullScreen I have to exit every single time I want to enter a URL. That could be hundreds of times a day! In Firefox you just type Alt_D and it works. No need to exit FullScreen. So maybe an extension allows this to work as Google has decided to sabotage this browser as best they can. In Opera 12 it worked even better (what a shock!). A popup appeared right in the center of the FullScreen for you to enter the URL when you typed Alt_D. That was perfect. Just like so many things about Opera 12.

@leocg If I could edit the op I would but I can't. At least they can see it in my reply for clarification.

Not sure about an extension, but it seems there's no good way to do this in Opera.

You can hit ctrl + shift + j to open the console and type:

              window.open("https://arstechnica.com/");

and press enter for example. But, that way isn't that fun.

@burnout426 Yeah I think its a lot faster to just hit F11.

@rh99 I do wonder what Google was thinking when they messed up FullScreen. Especially that idiotic X that sits up on our screen in the way. What planet do those people inhabit? Surely its far from Earth and common sense.

@rh99 I see, so it's more of a feature request.

@leocg Well I do wonder how CCleaner, Brave and Vivaldi all do it. It can't be so difficult. Opera must have been taken over by some real dweebs to leave this out and so many other things that worked so well in Opera 12. If they had to rebuild it why on earth not build it on the Firefox platform that already has proven itself so well? Instead they choose the most clamped down, controlled browser platform on the planet.

@rh99 The idea of fullscreen is to have no UI. So, to use the UI you need to exit Fullscreen mode.

When you add UI to Fullscreen, you are basically breaking it

@leocg Well its a stupid design that should never have been approved. It hugely restricts your navigation ability. And wastes our time. Especially with so many websites using space wasting tool bars and banners on the top. We're almost always using widescreen monitors after all. Vertical space is always at a premium. Firefox understands. Chrome doesn't. Boo Chrome.

@rh99 Well, full screen was never made to fix bad webpages designs.

@leocg I'd say if Alt_D works in FullScreen that is one excellent design. That saves me hitting F11 all day long. Firefox nailed it. Chrome failed.

@rh99 It would break the idea, the purpose of full screen, as said. Also, full screen is not to be used all the time.

@leocg Well Firefox "breaks the idea" and it works great. So there! 🙂 A feature is to be used however we want. Your statement makes no sense. is it "hard" on the browser if its used more? If I had my way FullScreen would be the default!

@leocg While the dev team may envision how their app should work it is finally the customer that decides how to use the solution. Learned that when I used to develop in a past life. One thing we can do as developers is to see how the tool is used and make it so it is useful to all.
Agree with OP that having the ALT+D option is nice and if it is something that can be reintroduced (given it was available in earlier versions) than there is very little reason not too.
Telling users full screen should not be used all the time should not really be an option. the user's choice should not be curtailed.

I created an account just to comment on this as I think user Choice plays a big part in the success of the browser.

@bexik What's important is that other Chrome based browsers offer it now. What Opera did before (a popup in the center of the screen) was way better of course. If they could bring that back all the better.

Opera 12 was the ultimate browser in terms of configurability which drew millions to use it. What they should do is bring back as much as possible while still staying on the Chrome platform as that is what they've chosen. Of course we can also dream for world peace. 🙂
