In the last version(s) of Opera it began opening all my Opera windows when I start Opera from my taskbar (after I started my computer). I use Win 10. My Opera has auto update in settings, so I don't know exactly the version opera started doing this.
Previously opera started just the last "active" windows I was using (open on my screen) when I shutdown my computer.
To save energy and for other reasons I shutdown my computer when I don't use it (up to many times a day). I work in 30-50 Opera windows with several hundreds of tabs. Please don't start argue the way I use Opera or my computer!!
Previously my computer and Opera started quickly, but the way Opera works now it's very time consuming and so memory consuming that my computer become slow and useless, when Opera open All my windows and refresh hundreds of tabs each time I start my computer and Opera.
I can't find ant way to turn this of in opera setting. The only way I found as quick fix is for now, is as quickly as possible use the show my workspace, function in taskbar.

I se that Vivaldi browser is working the same way as opera do now. Chrome doesn't.
I used Opera as my main browser since it came on the market, but if there's no way to fix it in settings or Opera fix it, I'm forced to switch to Chrome.

@flyforfun If you have the option to start from last session enabled, Opera should have all opened windows and tabs on startup, and it has been happening since a long time.

It's strange that Chrome isn't doing the same.

          Thanks leocg

I have the start from last session enable in settings (Retain tabs from previous session).
So this is a question on definition of "last". For me the definition is like I describe how Opera worked previously. When I klick the Opera icon on my taskbar it open the last windows I had been using and not the rest 49 "unused".

          This is from help.opera:
"Retain tabs from previous session – Opera resumes your previous browsing session when launched. All tabs left open when last using the browser will be open in your new browsing session."

My understanding of this text is like the "previous" way Opera worked. If not then there's a new question of definition on "Open". In my understanding "open" means uses or open on screen in the ongoing session. ALL the other is "unopen". Next time I start my computer Opera just start the "open" and not ALL incl the "unopen".

So what happens if i unchecked the "Retain tabs from previous session"??? Will Opera close all my "open" and "unopen" session so next time I start my computer all opera session/windows are gone??? Or will the sessions/windows be there so I can choose which I will start when I klick the Opera icon in taskbar???

I only experienced that Opera open ALL sessions in the last "weeks".

@flyforfun If choose another option for startup, the windows and tabs from last session will not be there and Opera will open with just start page. Or with the pages that you have set to be opened together with the browser.

@flyforfun It seems that there is some confusion with the word session.

When you start Opera, you start a (new) session. That session includes all of yours windows and tabs.
So when you launch Opera with the option to continue from last session, it will start with all opened tabs and windows from the previous session.

That behavior should be the same in all Chromium based browsers.

How are you closing Opera? To properly save all opened windows , you need to click the Opera menu and choose "exit" while all the windows you want are still open. If you shut down Windows while Opera is still running where Windows ends up killing Opera, all kinds of things can go wrong.

Also note that Opera now uses the Chromium session manager where Opera used to use its own. If you're letting Windows kill Opera, this change could cause a difference in behavior compared to before. You can try testing that by going to the URL opera://flags/#new-session-manager, disabling the flag, and restarting Opera to test if you get the old behavior that you used to have. Just note that this isn't a solution and the flag could be removed at any time. Also, before messing with the flag, you might want to close down Opera and back up your profile and cache folders (goto the URL opera://about for the locations) first so you have something to restore from if switching the flag messes things up and you lose your opened windows and tabs.

Did you ever find a solution?
I am using Opera like you do and I have the same issue. This behaviour came in a recent patch and is extremely annoying.

@kokalle No, I haven't got the time to test the solution that burnout426 suggested.. So far I just started the computer and made coffee... But I need to solve it..... Or I have to buy new computer with tons of RAM memory... When I get the time I've update my tread her with the result.
If you get the time to test, please let me know..
