After the latest upgrade (86.0.4363.23) on kde neon Opera is once again unable to play any sort of video it seems.

Any thing on Youtube simply crashes the page entirely.

Come on guys, this has been a problem for years now. What gives?

      I have tried the usual

      sudo cp .local/lib/vivaldi/media-codecs-b647ccfd4aea97d646a09a82b06a46e617c55c2a7781697ac2dea35061aec9d6/libffmpeg.so /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera/

but this hasn't fixed the issue this time.

      What's the fix now please?

      P.

        I have the same problem!
I downloaded the libffmpeg.so file from the Arch repository, changed it to Opera in the directory /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera/ but this time it didn't work.

          I'm glad I'm not alone 🙂
I've tried all of the documented fixes and so far nothing works.

          Very tiresome.

@pindos nop, does not work for me this time - this was my solution before. Also tried installing with deb and then with snap and applied this on each.

This fixed the h.264 video playback for me many versions ago.

It also applies the fix with each Opera update for me (Ubuntu 20.04 based).

Try it on clean opera installation. It's highly likely you've tried other fixes previously.

New version of Opera based on Chromium 100 which is incompatible with older libffmpeg.so. So if you applied old fix that replaced libffmpeg.so that comes with Opera, it will crash on every page containing video or sound.

The script above doesn't replace that lib, but adds new one to lib_extra folder.

Ok I willl describe my steps:

                            • sudo dpkg --purge opera-stable
                            • sudo rm -rf /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera

                            Find all Opera files

                            • find /home/valdinei/ -iname opera

Delete all files in my home

                            • rm -rf /home/valdinei/.config/opera
                            • rm -rf /home/valdinei/.cache/opera

After this I reinstalled a new opera version

                            • sudo dpkg -i opera-stable_86.0.4363.23_amd64.deb

My last version is not broken page, but all whatsApp videos display a message "error" do not play.

                            Youtube works fine,
Instagram show me a video but when a I click play not work.

Any idea to fix WhatsApp Videos and Instagram ?

@valdineidossantos follow steps from that page https://github.com/Ld-Hagen/fix-opera-linux-ffmpeg-widevine
But note that script can't run automatically if you're installing Opera manually by dpkg. In such case you'll need to run script as described in step 3, or using alias "fix-opera" if you've made step 4.
