Every time I click on an email link in the Mail app, instead of opening a new message, it opens in Opera, even when I've quit Opera. I've been through the Opera preferences and cannot find anything to change, nor in Mail. I hate to remove Opera from my Mac because I've found it valuable in certain circumstances. If I use another mail application, e.g., Mimestream, it does not happen. Anyone know what I can change?

@khbiz Most probably the mailto protocol is associated with Opera in the OS settings. Changing it should solve the issue.

That sounds logical, but I don't know where to locate that. System Preferences doesn't have a logical spot that I can see. Nor does Mail or Opera preferences.

I was on the phone with AppleCare, even pushed to a senior advisor. In the process, uninstalled Opera (which obviously resolved the one problem, but not satisfactorily because I use Opera). Interestingly, with or without it, I cannot paste an address into Mail when it contains "mailto:". Restarted in Safe Mode and can do that, however. Updated to 12.3. No change. It's a very irritating conundrum.

@khbiz On Windows there is something like Settings/Preferences > Apps > Default Apps where you can change it. Don't know if MacOS has something like that.

@leocg Having the same problem - I've looked but can't find anything. I just want Opera to refer to my usual email client

@rwj I did discover, in my Mail preferences, that my "Default email reader" had somehow been set to "Opera." Under General preferences. That solved one of my problems!

@khbiz I think I have sorted it - I had not set my email client to default, seems it was nothing to do with Opera at all. Don't know why I didn't have this problem with Firefox before moving to Opera
But interesting I couldn't find "Default email reader" in my opera preferences (Mac for Settings) at all

@rwj It was in the settings for the Mail app.
