How do I turn off mail

I have used Opera for the lat few years, for the last week or so I have been getting an intermittent error message saying "There was a problem initializing Opera mail" despite the fact I don't use Opera Mail, only Opera 12.17 as a web browser.
I have deleted and reinstalled Opera to no effect.
Is there a setting to turn off the attempts to start Opera Mail?

Did you have an RSS subscription? That is also handled through the mail client.
If you don't use anything related to mail, the easy answer would be to delete the entire mail directory. First, go to Help > About Opera and just copy the path that is listed there for mail. Close Opera, open your file manager ("My Computer", "My Documents" or any directory listing) and paste the path you copied into the location bar. Select All (Ctrl-A on the keyboard) and Delete. (If it complains about a file still in use - Opera is still shutting down, wait 30 seconds and try again.)

Check 'O-Menu / Mail and chat accounts...' and see if you have anything listed in the window that appears. If so, select it and click the 'Delete' button.

Deleted the entire mail directory in Opera x64, but as soon as I start Opera again it gets recreated.
Looked at the mail and chat accounts, nothing there and it invites me to create an account.
Thanks for the advice so far, I'll come back if the problem re-occurs.

Of course it gets recreated - but without whatever is causing the error. It is possible to completely disable the mail client, but doing so disables some other features ... okay, not so sure they are bothering with site patching updates since 15 went stable, but if they still do them you need to have the mail client enabled to parse the updates.
