Opera Mail Issues & Suggestions

Hello,
I love Opera Mail and so far it is the best email client I've tried for speed and features (and I've tried most of what's out there). I switched from Postbox after -just like thunderbird- it kept hanging a lot while downloading emails (on big email accounts) and it was very annoying, and I haven't looked back since. I used Opera since v.6 but never really used the email client much when it was still bundled together with the browser, as I prefer something seperate from the browser, for various reasons.
There are a few issues and suggestions I'd like to see implemented though, that would make day-to-day use much easier.
-
I have an issue with mailing lists: I hide them and they keep appearing after restarting the program. Minor inconvenience but still it's a bit irritating.
-
I'd like to be able to see the unread count next to the email account, even when the account is expanded. Now it is only shown when account is contracted, but I think it is very useful to see it next to the account name even when expanded, especially with many accounts (I have 6 and I have to keep em all closed to check em at a glance effectively)
-
I'd like an option for the signature to appear after the mail body but before the quote (or the reply-to email quote to be at the bottom of the page). It is better for me this way and a toggle option for that would be appreciated.
-
Unread count also included SPAM folders. That is a bit annoying, as the INBOX is empty but it shows an unread count and I have to manually delete the spam folder emails to keep the count accurate, which kinda negates the need for a spam folder.
-
Would like a button/Shortcut to toggle all conversation view emails for the currently showing email headers to the "open"/expanded position. Currently I have to press the arrow on each conversation email to do that. (Thuderbird/Postbox was * ). Also, it would be better to see the whole convertation view directly on the list of emails, and not an a new empty list when pressing the Show message Thread button.
-
I'd like when adding a colored label to an email for the whole email header line/row to be painted that color: it will be much easier to see what is what and them to stand out (last label applied for multiple labels)
-
This is of a more personal preference, but I'd prefer the mail accounts, instead of accordion-expanding and "pushing" the next emails accounts down to show the folders (Inbox/sent/imap folders etc) to expand the contents AFTER all the email accounts (and highlight the email account). That is because I have lots of IMAP folders on some accounts and I'd like to keep em open but can't cause then I have to scroll up and down all the time to check for unread emails and access other email accounts.
Well, these are just some suggestions I'd like to see implemented, nothing that actually keeps me from using Opera Mail (like some features missing or wrong on the eM Client). Tried to find a more formal "feedback" feature, but well I guess the forums are good for that as well.
Keep up the good work!

I very much doubt Opera mail will remain. The world is steadily moving away from email clients to webmail and other means of communicating. I would be very surprised to see Opera continue to develop this client. I think they've simply offered it temporarily since it is little more than the old mail client stripped from the Presto browser. If your email is vital to you and you must have an email client, I would advise thinking about backing it up with another like Thunderbird or The Bat. Don't hold your breath on further Opera mail development.

If you hide a mailing list, opera will automatically show it again if there's a new message in it. Opera just works automatically like that.
Instead, right-click in the "Mailing Lists" access point and create a new folder. Then, drag the lists you want to hide into it and keep that folder collapsed. It's a decent workaround.

Yeh. Just the way it works now. Nothing you can do about it.

Many users have wished for this. See this page and this page (save them and load them locally) to see why it's a problem to do so with a real signature. But, it'd be possible to do with a fake signature even Opera would have implemented an option.
- Unread count also included SPAM folders. That is a bit annoying, as the INBOX is empty but it shows an unread count and I have to manually delete the spam folder emails to keep the count accurate, which kinda negates the need for a spam folder.
That shouldn't happen as long as you click the "settings for this view" button the toolbar above the message list for each view besdies "All Messages/Spam" and uncheck "show spam".
- Would like a button/Shortcut to toggle all conversation view emails for the currently showing email headers to the "open"/expanded position. Currently I have to press the arrow on each conversation email to do that.
shift + left and shift + right should do that. Also, for Opera Mail in Opera 12.17, gesture left and gesture right should do the same.
The expand/collapse and expand all/collapse all shortcut commands are:
Open item
Open all items
Close item
Close all itemsJust tie them to whatever shortcuts you want in the shortcut editor if you don't the defaults of left/right and shift etc.
Also, it would be better to see the whole convertation view directly on the list of emails, and not an a new empty list when pressing the Show message Thread button.
There was talk about doing that in the past, but it was never implemented.
- This is of a more personal preference, but I'd prefer the mail accounts, instead of accordion-expanding and "pushing" the next emails accounts down to show the folders (Inbox/sent/imap folders etc) to expand the contents AFTER all the email accounts (and highlight the email account). You can click the wrench icon on the mail panel toolbar and hide all the account access points so that just the "All Messages" access point is showing for example. Then, you can right-click in the mail panel and switch "show messages from" to show just a certain account's messages. To get a button to switch the accounts (and also show you which account is selected), you can right-click on a toolbar, goto "Customize -> appearance -> buttons ->" and drag the "All Accounts" drop-down to the mail panel toolbar. Just note that it resets to all accounts on startup.
The downside of that is you might not like it if you make use and want to see each IMAP folder in the IMAP accounts. But, you can at least group multiple accounts together. Set the group on the general tab in the account's properties. The group should show up in the account selector too.
Not what you want, but it's something different to try.
Well, these are just some suggestions I'd like to see implemented, nothing that actually keeps me from using Opera Mail
Unfortunately, Opera mail isn't being worked on anymore. Further, Opera Mail is just Opera 12.16 with some browser parts hidden. It's experimental and a lot of preferences are missing. And, gestures are missing. Instead, you could just use Opera 12.16 for just mail. In "alt + p -> advanced -> programs", just add/set http and https to open in your default browser so that clicking on links in emails works as expected.

I just wanted to add a screenshot of a bug I see in Opera Mail (or is it a slightly corrupted mail database?).
I should probably consider to move to another mail client.

burnout426 thanks for the detailed reply!
Your suggestions are spot on and very helpful!I am a bit sad to hear that Opera Mail is not being supported cause as I said it is my favourite so far. As for having the Opera 12 just for emails, I'll try it and see how it goes.
Thanks again for all the info all.

Looks like it.

Thanks burnout426. I just reinstalled Opera Mail and hopefully that problem is gone.
I recreated accounts and labels from scratch and imported my old mails and contacts. The Opera Mail folders in AppData are now looking a lot cleaner. I dragged these folders with me since 2004.

The problem is back.
Does a database check clear them up?
Is Opera shutting down properly all the time? Do you have your mail folder in a custom location? Do you have any backup software accessing Opera's mail folder while Opera is running?
