Gmail as default in Windows 8.1 - how?

Hi,
I am not a very advanced PC/Opera user and hope someeone out there can help me. I use Opera Stable 23 on my new HP PC (no touch screen) which has Windows 8.1 installed. My problem is connected to e-mailing pictures. I e-mail from Picasa through my gmail-account and I wish to continue doing so. However, on my new PC I am not able to e-mail pictures - not from Picasa and not directly from my picture folders. Gmail is not a choice when I try to choose standard programs for e-mail - there is only e-mail from Microsoft (looks like some kind of app?). When I try to change e-mail in "Internet Options, Programs" I am being transferred to the standard programs where only the above mentioned app is available. Does anyone have a solution for me? -

Gmail is a web page and not a program so you can't choose it as your standard email client.
You need to go to Gmail's page and start your message from there or check if Picasa has an option to do it for you.
Btw, it doesn't seem related to Opera so moving to a more appropriate area.

Thank you. I've tried to google this problem and many people seem to be of the opinion that this needs to be set individually for the browsers one use. It seems to be a common problem, but I have not found a solution for newer versions of Opera.

To add Gmail as a mail client on Windows, you have to create a command-line program that accepts a mailto URI, UTF-8-percent-encodes it, adds it to the Gmail https compose URI and launches the compose URI in your default browser (or browser of choice). Then, you have to create some keys in the registry that allow you to set the command-line program as the default mail client.
So, it's possible. But, you'll have to program something if you can't find someone that's already done in on the net.
The Gmail Compose URI looks like:
https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=utf-8-percent-encoded-version-of-the-mailto-uri

Moving back to Opera for Windows forum.

Actually you can, but the browser must support registerProtocolHandler. Chrome supports it, Opera 12 too, but they haven't enabled it yet in Opera 23+.

Good point. That only works for handling the protocol inside the browser though (although, nothing's stopping a browser from going further if they want to implement it).
