I feel a bit sad letting go of Opera, at least for the time being. I've been using Opera since the early 2000s, back when it had ad banners. Several features that I found useful were dropped over the years, but nothing was as much of a deal-breaker as losing Recently Closed Tabs in its "classic" form and usefulness.

I kind of (try to) understand the reasoning why reopening closed tabs is done through search. When looking for a tab I recently closed, I know the topic and words used on that page, therefore typing a keyword should be faster for finding that tab than going through a list. This workflow should be improving the user experience, but I actually see at least two barriers in this workflow:

      1. I have to think what words were used on the closed tab, as opposed to just scanning a list and maybe finding the right tab by its favicon. (Minor case, but then there are also tabs that were showing image files directly, with random names like 3a5f3e88c33.jpg.)
      2. I have to move my hand from the mouse to the keyboard.

I've seen that 71 will be bringing a Show More to show more than three closed tabs, but that is an additional unnecessary click.

Also, I find that having a list open tabs in Search in Tabs is somewhat redundant, as there already is a "list" of open tabs on top of the window.

What might be a workable compromise for the Search in Tabs popup:

      • By default list only closed tabs, as many as fit in the popup, not only three.
      • Have a Show More at the bottom in case there are even more closed tabs than fit in the popup. Or make the popup scrollable.
      • Search still searches through open and closed tabs.
      • Add a setting that also shows open tabs in the popup, to accommodate users who like having a list of open tabs.

@superduper Got it with custom panels (whatsapp web, instagram, twitter etc), it's fast as hell, Twitter videos work nice... Thanks for the recommendation. And also, thanks von Tetzchner for not upsetting their users.

Opera, it was nice while it lasted. You screwed your own product. uninstall

@primoz I agree with you. I don't think typing is faster or better or more accurate.
In case of the accidentally closed tab, mouse is definitely faster.
In case if it's random characters or the page caption is in a different language, I don't even have that language on my keyboard layout, so I can't type that.

Hey i would like to have my closed tabs the way they always were, there used to be a flag for this "flags/#search-in-open-tabs" but i can no longer find it, is it gone? Renamed? Is there any way to get the old recently closed tab option back?

How hard would it be to add a setting slider that toggles the button between search (new) and closed tabs (old)

Opera developers, listen to the users and bring back the Recently Closed Tabs button. You are losing credibility. I use Opera since 2000 or something like that, so i know what i'm talking about. Even i, an old school user, am thinking to stop using this program because i feel disrespected by the programmers when you don't listen to what people are talking about or don't give an explanation. At least you should explain why your taking off a function that people like and why can't you simple make it optional.

                        Shocking.
I had removed the autoupdate.exe, it worked for a few weeks, and now again! opera has updated itself to 70 and the recently closed tabs function is gone!
I wanted to look what the thread "Where is the "Recently closed tabs/Tab menu" button on the top right?" suggests, and the thread was closed by the moderators just in time for this situation, claiming: "There was enough discussion about this now" What is this, public gagging?

Any ideas to roll back to 69 and stay with the recently closed tab feature?

                        lg

I've installed the portable version of Vivaldi now. Seems promising!
Shame. Opera was my favourite browser for a few years now. Unfortunately it bent with the google way of thinking and focused on data exploration by forcing users to perform searches that can be tracked and evaluated.
I'm not part of the target group any more.

@nicolleen install 69, then "Go to Windows's System / Advanced System Settings, in the Advanced tab click the button to manage the Environment Variables and add one called "OPERA_AUTOUPDATE_DISABLED". Done."

                              @cfyzuk Thanks for your help.
As i said, I have done this, that is, I have deleted the autoupdate.exe straight away, but now, a few weeks later, suddenly the desired button is gone and the info revealed Opera 70. I don't know why, but Opera seems to have found a way around it to autoupdate.

@nicolleen Go Vivaldi. It has more than 20 recently closed tabs and a bunch of other goodies. It may take a little while to get used to, but it will be worth it. I am currently using Vivaldi alongside with Opera in the process of complete switching to it.
The only thing that Vivaldi does not not have it's the free VPN. But I personally practically do not use VPN in Opera anyway.
There is another flaw with Opera that Vivaldi fixes. Opera has some bug that won't let you do authentication on sites using social networks. Vivaldi does it without any problems.
Try it and see for yourself and tell "helpful" Opera developers to stick their product into that orifice of their anatomy where the sun does not shine, if they threat their users this way.

I would say that other than usual unfamiliarity with the new interface, which in reality is not that much different from Opera, it's quite an commendable product. I'm planning to completely switch to it and make it my default browser.

At one point recently we could expand it to show more than three, now that's also gone.

And it doesn't even show the most recent three tabs, it seems to pick and choose on what closed tabs to show, and quite frequently the one I want isn't in it even though I just closed it 30 seconds ago.

                                            Why?
