@TimB Development of Opera Mail stopped even before Opera changed to Chromium.
That security update was something totally exceptional and another one shouldn't be expected.

@TimB Would you invest your money in something that very few people still use?

I run a much smaller company as Opera by myself. Your question can also be answered by knowing all the pros and cons, knowing what money these "few people" could bring in, how much the (tiny) team for making updates cost, how big the benefit (as side effect) for Opera Browser is, ... and much more...
In General: If I had a really great product, I wouldn't give it up easily. Not even if a second product of mine brings in a little more money, if some customer also loves the other product. (And if the staff for handling it would be available of course)

Actually you could be right, that only a "very few people" use it. But as you said by yourself, we speak about a lot of years without development and (I guess) without making some advertisement. I don't know how much people use Opera Mail, but I can tell you that Opera Mail is still a great email client.
I also think, that the "team" for Opera Mail could be really small (tiny). We are speaking only about small enhancements. Also remember that Opera Mail runs several years without the needs of updates.

And be aware, It could also help to attract more people to use Opera Browser of course. That's another good side effect. People who use Opera Mail (like me) will also often use Opera Browser (also like me).

I think it's a pity to abandon such a great Email Client.
Another idea could be to leave Opera Mail as Open Source to the Community.

            @TimB

            Do you know Vivaldi?

There, is one of the "original" Opera's founder.

They are working on M3, the M2 (Opera Mail) "evolution".

I don't know if they will split it also from the browser, but it would be the update you want.

@zalex108 So they say, but the last mention I find on their forum is 2015. I have been waiting years to see it and hope is dwindling. In my experience their webmail is less than reliable so I am guessing mail is not a high priority at Vivaldi.

                Also,
Take in count that they started all from scratch just few years ago.

I did not know Vivaldi. I read the page a few minutes ago the first time. Screenshots of browser UI look very familiar to me (as old Opera user). 馃檪
There are a bunch of features and information on the Vivaldi page, but I only see a content about the browser itself. For me, I see no sign that they will build the Desktop Email Client like Opera Mail also (or have the Opera Mail Client fully integrated in their browser, which would be also Ok)

But I will ask in that forum also. 馃檪 When I see the Vivaldi Browser UI, it seems the plan is to stick close to old Opera. So perhaps also "Opera Mail" integration will be on the list later. Thank you for that information!

@TimB Opera Mail may still be a very good product but it's something made to read and write e-mails, something that people have been doing less and less each day.
E-mail nowadays is mostly used only to get notifications, recover passwords, confirm account in some new social network, things like that. Only in some bussiness e-mail is still used on a regular basis but mostly through a web mail service.

So, in my opinion, investing on an e-mail cliente is investing in something without a future.

Some testers have said there are no plans to provide a standalone M3. It will be part of Vivaldi like M2 is part of Opera 12.

I see you already found one of the M3 posts. But, here it is for others.

Yes, I read about this aspect. It would not be a problem for me. If the Mail Client in it is as great as M2, then I am happy also with an Browser aside. 馃檪
