Opera beta 67 - news

  • The Opera 67.0.3575.2 has entered the beta stage ;-)
The change log, and the announcement.

    Pop-up visual tab-cycler

We’ve implemented a pop-up visual tab-cycler to give you quick access to your open tabs.

Using "Ctrl+Tab", you’ll get a clear visual of your open tabs – up to 5 thumbnails side by side – and be able to cycle through them.

    Sidebar setup panel

The Sidebar settings menu has been replaced with a new panel, which is opened from the "three-dot" icon at the bottom of the sidebar. The new panel is well-organized – making workspace and sidebar management more comfortable and intuitive. For starters, you are now able to edit or remove all of the sidebar elements individually. Starting from the top, you can customize your Workspaces by: adding, removing, showing or hiding them. Also, all of the messengers are now listed on the sidebar.

In the Special Features group, you’ll find Opera’s features like: My Flow, Instant Search and CryptoWallet. Opera Tools is the last category with browser management areas like: History, Downloads and Extensions. History and Bookmarks can now be configured to be opened from either the sidebar panel or the full-page menu.

    Some changes, fixes and improvements:
    - DNA-82866 Create UI for setting DNS over HTTPS options.
    - DNA-83690 [Mac] Make sure to add tabs closed by mouse to recently closed tabs.
    - DNA-66232 Crash at media::software::VTVideoDecodeAccelerator::ProcessTaskQueue.

    New Opera's flags:
#horizontal-tab-cycler (enabled by def. - ready to check)
    Enables new tab cycler UI.

    #sidebar-setup-panel (S/A)
Enables the setup panel for the browser sidebar.

#highlight-duplicate-tabs-on-hover (disabled by def. - work in progress)
When hovering a tab, display any inactive tab in the same window and workspace, which has the same address as the hovered tab in hover state.

    #suggestion-scoring-improved (S/A)
Enable better scoring for history Speed Dials entries in Address Bar.

    #sync-passphrase-papercuts (S/A)
Enables enhancements to make it easier to deal with lost, or forgotten implicit encryption passphrases in Sync.

Opera's flags enabled by default in this build (ready to check):
    #history-onboarding
After close 3 or more tabs, history onboarding will appear. This is one time action.

    #workspaces
    Allows organizing tabs into workspaces.

    Removed Opera's flags: #chromium-ua-compatibility, #crypto-wallet-ios-instructions, #ffmpeg-demuxer-everywhere and #ffmpeg-demuxer-in-platform-audio-file-reader.

Chromium is updated to version 80.0.3987.7.

  • @l33t4opera Horizontal tab cycler is awful! I find the current implementation excellent as it is. In fact, escaping from Firefox's horizontal tab cycler was my No. 1 reason for abandoning Firefox!

I typically have roughly 50 tabs open, more when I'm at work and it's handy being able to see most of them in the vertical tab cycler. The preview helps as well, as sometimes you can't quite tell from the title or link whether you're selecting the right page or not.

Will the current behaviour still be available?

I'm OK with browsers offering new features or changing defaults but it's annoying when they remove old ones when the newer ones are inferior.

  • Hi @newworldman, for now, you can switch it off by disabling opera:flags#horizontal-tab-cycler, and restarting the Opera.

In the future, even if the flag will be removed, you can avoid of displaying it as follows: go to opera:settings/keyboardShortcuts, scroll down to "Switch right through tabs", and add "Ctrl+Tab" for it and "Ctrl+Shift+Tab" for "Switch left through tabs". It will warn you, that it's used for "Cycle forward/backward through tabs", but you can press "Yes, replace", and the shortcut will be reassigned.

Answering your question: I am one of the users, so I can't tell you for sure, whether the flag will be removed in the future, and instead of it, there will be the switch in the Settings to toggle it, or not.

  • @l33t4opera We'll have to wait and see what they do. I hope they don't totally junk the way it currently works. Apart from this, Ctrl+Tab "browse in most recently used order" is a must for me. No browser can be the default for me without it. Opera, Vivaldi, Firefox and IE are the only mainstream browsers that have it.
