all text has vanished

i've just updated from linux mint 16 to 17 and i had to install opera again.
everything was going well, i was ticking and unticking boxes. i was in the appearance menu box when suddenly all the words just disappeared!
not only in appearance but everywhere within the browser, bookmarks, etc. there are a few thing in their places such as some _ _ ... also +12 +11, all very sparse.
i must of accidently unchecked something i shouldn't of? surely that is the only explanation?
i wonder what it can be?
thanks -

i didn't change anything to do with the fonts, not sure about encoding, not sure what that is!
i uninstalled opera and then installed it again but it doesn't come back as a fresh intall, all my bookmarks are still there as well as this fault.
it would be difficult to change anything as like i said, the text has gone. -

If you want to try to fix it, open your system's file manager. Tell it to look at the folder ~/.opera, and delete the file operaaprefs.ini (while Opera is closed). When you start Opera, it will act like it is a new install ... except it will still have your bookmarks, mail (if it had mail to begin with), passwords, etc.
Opera has been known to do strange things if the system locale was changed - but that would not be a setting in Opera.

thanks for that.
well i did what you said and then i reinstalled opera again. this time i did indeed get a fresh install, BUT!
even though it is definitely not my previous opera browser, the same thing is happening! i can't believe it!

Here's a good free one that you don't have to create an account to upload and link a picture, http://tinypic.com/
NB: I know I have been posting this hosting site a lot recently, and others may think this dodgy/dubious or even spammy. But just to get things clear, I post it simply for the reasons mentioned in my first line of this post and nothing more. But, if anyone has any problems with me recommending that hosting site at every opportunity, I stop doing it, no problem.

It is one of maybe half a dozen commonly used sites around here and one of the less obnoxious ones. Do not use (or suggest) a site with ads for adult//dating sites or with too many ads, other than that I wouldn't worry about it. (I have an account on Flickr so I use them, but otherwise ... I have seen some sites used that have access problems and wouldn't recommend those either.)
