Site automatically got my location despite setting "always ask"

doctorowl last edited byHi there, I'm not sure if this is a security issue or I'm just not understanding how this works. I have my settings in Opera mobile (Android 9) on "always ask" for location. I've been using Opera for 2 years & so far every website has indeed shown a pop-up asking for permission to my location, which I can then enable/disable on a per-website basis. However I just visited a website for the first time today & it automatically knew my location without asking. I've cleared my history/cookies/cache etc. and even reset all my websites back to default just to make sure I hadn't given permission in the past but forgot about it. Then I even set my location to "denied" just to be safe. However it STILL knows my location down to the zip code. I'm a bit stumped here. I thought the point of this setting was to disable geolocation so my IP address cannot be linked to my location. Am I missing something? This is the first time a website has done this to me so I'm not sure if it's intentional or not.

@doctorowl Geolocation is only one of the ways for a site to know your location.
Most probably the site is using your IP to find out your location.
