I used to learn it as a second foreign language.Hello!
I am following this course and also practicing on Memrise and Duolingo.
Being Portuguese and all, I'm used to a difficult grammar and having studied Na'vi for fun I'm also used to the cases. At the moment, my main issue with German is... the exceptions. Why do they exist? It would be a lot simpler if they didn't.
Regards

I strongly believe that no exceptions ever exist.
They call it something that doesn't obey by their simple and few laws/rules. But there's always something that they don't know - yet.
Apart from that, it happens that didactics/teachers don't wanna "bother pupils with" lots of stuff from higher levels - like diachronic relations within etymology. And that approach is fairly justified, however: you won't learn all about friction, downforce and lateral G solving an arithmetic exercise about a lorry doing 50mi/h blah-blah. -

Mere mathematics.
All in the Universe obeys laws. No jerks, no exceptions.
You can take any complicated graph of any natural process under the.. um.. Big Bang - it will be a net result of a huge number of elementary processes, like described by parabolas and sinusoids.
Take radio: they use such net signals to encode high quality broadcast, right? -

I've heard of some famous generals: Gen.Motors, Gen.Electrics, and a very wise guy, Gen.Relativity:)
Three more came to mind:)
General Linguistics, General Practitioner, and General User Interface:)
