CPU hog, updates repeatedly fail

Since a few versions back Opera has become unusable. I always updated it through the about page, but no it goes into an endless loop: downloads new version, asks for relaunch, when I relaunch the browser it lands on the about page and redownloads the same version again. And again. And again...
I had to download the installer and run it to overcome this. This has happened with the last 3 or 4 versions.
Besides, having ONLY the about page open, Opera hogs more than 100% of a CPU core (I had a quad-core). While Chrome, with 15 tabs open(!), takes a single-digit percentage. Something is very wrong. See screenshot.

Could you check which Opera process is actually hogging the memory? To do so run built-in task manager which can be run through developer menu.
As for the relunching through opera:about page we know there can be some timing issue. Relunch button can appear before whole update process has finished and when it's pressed right away it could possibly lead to a broken update experience.
