Tried to update from "43" to at least "52" using Operas inbuilt updater. I got greeted with "An error occurred while checking for updates" . Closing and reopening the browser tried again 5 times before it got to "52". Opera is in my opinion the worst browser at manually updating itself, from years of experience. I have tried other browsers in the past that update at first attempt apart from the browser that Opera is based on beginning with "C", that was one reason I stopped using it. Please moderator don't suggest that I have a corrupt profile as it would be highly unlikely to have a corrupt profile on all my machines ! Don't blame it on extensions preventing downloads either because I don't have any installed on this particular machine. Why can't Opera concentrate on the fundamentals like its update mechanism rather than the other stuff. There will be a point when I will say enough is enough .Opera developers take note.

Sometimes this happens when Opera has already fetched the new updated but doesn't run it right. When this is the case (which you just have to guess), running the installer exe in the latest version folder in Opera's program files folder sometimes does the trick.

The moderators reply is a bit difficult to follow. Is he saying I should download the Opera installer which downloads each file one by one or does he mean the offline installer package (one big file) which when I last looked still had the mysterious "88" version ? Also can he give me an example of "third party softwares" that may interfere with the auto updates. Thanks

Whatever you want, but the one you have downloaded from www.opera.com should be enough.
Anti-virus, firewalls, something like this.
