Version 56 doesn't highlight bookmarks bar items on mouse hover or click. Once you open a folder and there are items in it, moving mouse across items highlights them, but it doesn't ANYTHING on the bookmarks bar directly. I have no clue how this managed to get past QA for the release.

The bug is from 56 Beta(I reported about it in Beta's blog too and before 56 ver. went to stable). Maybe items are actually highlighted (because in dark mode highlighting is seen, but hardly) but probably highlighting's color = bookmarks bar color in light mode.

@andrew84 Well, that's stupid. That's like designing a car and along the way you forget installing a windshield during development process. And then you just decide to release the car without a windshield. I've noticed this the moment I installed Opera. It's next to impossible to believe no one at Opera failed to notice missing Bookmarks bar highlighting on mouse hover. And these stupid bugs just keep on stacking. Few versions ago Opera created bug where if you open a Bookmarks bar folder and you click on its subfolder, whole menu disappears instead of accelerate opening of the subfolder like it used to do in the past. Talked about it and nothing got changed. Now we got this extra bug on top of it. I sure hope we won't get a 3rd stupid bug on top of these existing two... Which is why I'm so persistent on these things. If you're not consistent and precise on fixing stuff, things just start stacking up. And things are stacking up with Opera which worries me a bit...
