Clicking any mailto link results in endless, unstoppable new tabs being opened.

Problem is exactly as the title says. This isn't just one website but rather any site with a mailto link e.g. mailto:example@email.com What results is not just a new tab opening but rather one after another endlessly. I immediately open task manager and try to close the process but opera re-opens by itself, generating endless empty new tabs.
It appears that closing the opera task at the right timing seems to close it for good. I'm running the latest opera and this problem does not appear on any other browser.
This problem is quite bothersome as my university online portal has many mailto links which upon clicking, result in this mess. Does anyone else get this problem as well?

Sounds like Opera itself is configured as the default mail client on the system. When you click on a mailto link, Opera is probably passing the link to itself.
For starters, set something as the default mail client on your system.
Also, goto "Menu -> settings -> Privacy and Security -> Handlers -> Manage Handlers" and clear the list for good measure.
Manually type a mailto link in the address field. If it doesn't do it then and only does it for links you click on in a web page, and the handler list is empty, then it's probably an extension that's doing it.
If needed, we can fix it via the registry, but that shouldn't be needed.

Launch a command prompt and enter
start "test" "mailto:test@example.com"
What program launches?

@burnout426 I didn't know this tip. I tried it. I can choose between 'nothing' and 'mail.google.com' in the list, BUT, when i validate the choice (google) the menu goes back to 'nothing'. So, i can't basically change anything. Any idea?

@jfhicter Try going to mail.google.com. When you go there, a bar should drop-down below the address bar asking you if you want Gmail to handling mailto links. Tell it "allow" and see if things work that way. If you don't get asked, remove mail.google.com from the handlers list and try again.

There is a bug apparently in the handler management

Close down Opera and edit its Preferences file (see the "Profile" path in "Menu -> About Opera for where it's at) with JSONEdit. Under "custom_handlers -> registered_protocol_handlers" you'll see the numbered entry for google. Just remove all the entries under "registered_protocol_handlers" and "ignored_protocol_handlers" (if any). Also, make sure "enabled" is set to true for custom_handlers. Save your changes. Then, start Opera, go to mail.google.com and add it via the allow bar.

@burnout426 I did it right. I checked the allow bar. Then the same box opens as when I do the management in Opera Handler Management: It says "do you authorized this program to change blah blah"... I click on OK... Then: it does not work (don't launch google mail when i click on mailto:something... Back to the same problem in the handler management...
Thank you man, but I guess this is a bug Opera team has to work on... A user don't have to mess with the Preference file, imho -

I may be wrong here (I frequently am!) but isn't the idea of the mail handler simply to open an external e-mail client program such as Outlook when a mailto link is clicked?
If you don't have an external e-mail program I wouldn't expect it to do anything, I didn't think it was designed to go the a webmail site in a new tab, although it would be nice if it did!
As I say, I may well be wrong in that, as I've always used an external e-mail program and not webmail, so this has never arisen in my direct experience.
Just a thought.

@davehawley Yep, you're wrong... Opera is supposed to be able to open mail.google when we click on a mailto link, indeed!

Fair enough, as I said I've never tried to use it (or any other browser) that way. It was just a thought.

@jfhicter It's a bug, corrected in Dev version.
FWIW, I was testing in the stable version and it was working fine for me and opening a compose at mail.google.com.
