@leocg - Color me totally confused. Before I posted my original question, I had cleaned the C-SSD cache folder, manually.

I had made this folder - "I:\linkedFiles\Opera-Cache"

Then I added the "move cache" to launcher.exe - in the registry edit. I ran Opera, several times, to check my progress. All cache was here - "C:\Users\ede\AppData\Local\Opera Software\Opera Stable\Cache"
The Media Cache had been cleaned, and it was still empty.

After using Opera several times, cache was only on the C-SSD. Then, as my update said, I had cache on C-SSD and I-HDD. At first, there was nothing in the Media Cache. I figured I hadn't generated any files for that folder. I used Crap Cleaner to check my cache. It only reported the C-SSD. CC wasn't reporting the I-HDD cache, but I fixed that. I decided to add an "include" to CC - "I:\linkedFiles\Opera-Cache" - include files, subfolders, and the folder itself. At this particular time, the cache was only on the C-SSD.

Now, after really using Opera for many hours, things are OK? I'm old, retired, and I think my butt has grown to my computer chair. I was going to check my progress, but your questions really put me on a mission.

Just now, I ran Crap Cleaner - but didn't "clean". I have a plethora of files in "C:\Users\ede\AppData\Roaming" There are in excess of 70 files. Most of these are really small. 0 KB, 1 KB, 44 KB, and up to 264 KB. I have 2 GPU files that are both 4, 104 KB. I have triple monitors and 2 nVidia video cards - and I'm not a gamer. I feel these roaming files are not what I'm concerned with.

I had used Crap Cleaner to clean all the cache on C-SSD before using Opera, again.

Now, for the confusion.
Crap Cleaner doesn't show any cache in "Local".

But wait. There is a new "parent" folder - "I:\linkedFiles\Opera-Cache\Opera Stable" with Cache and Media Cache subfolders. If memory serves, these were the folders where my I-HDD cache showed up when the cache was "split" between the C-SSD and I-HDD.

I welcome your input, and I'll run CC daily to look but not delete until I'm ready to back-up - twice a month. If anything changes - AGAIN - I'll post here. I feel I need to check for a week before calling this "color me confused but happy".

@leocg - Thank you for your time, but you didn't address my original query. Why can't I move EVERYTHING in the cache to my HDD. While I realize the sizes may be fine - for you - they don't move with the switch. Oh, well. Another day, another reason to wonder why control has to be "your way or the highway". No, I'm not talking about you, proper.

Try using the "--user-data-dir=<new profile path>" switch.

@edwinattaway I don't know, maybe that switch just doesn't work.
Regarding the files, I was just pointing that they are normal in a brower's cache.

You've used the Cache switch, @davehawley is pointing you to use the Profile switch.

It will move Profile and cache to a new location, - cache will be inside profile -.

@leocg - Later today, I'll have more information as to moving my profile and not just my cache. I feel this will move EVERYTHING. I do appreciate your time and patience. With this small snafu, maybe the real "fix" is just a matter of changing a couple of words.

leocg, I realize you were just being helpful, and you caught a bit of my holiday crazies. I did learn a lot from you. You went beyond what I've experienced in the past. For that, you are to be commended.

It's always good to have as much information as possible.

Latest update. I saw that Opera was coming out with Opera 50, so I waited until something happened with it. First, I tried to disable the update. I failed. I didn't want the update. It seems like Opera is going the way of Edge and Chrome - "It's going to my way or the highway."

Yes, I moved my profile. That caused more problems than I wanted. At least I saved my bookmarks and I saved the description of my 3 extensions. That was a minor problem, but a problem, none the less. My profile propagated to my I-HDD, and then came back to my C-SSD. I had two bookmark files - one on each drive. After the NOT WANTED update, I deleted the profile on my I-HDD and changed my shortcut back to --disk-cache-dir="I:\linkedFiles\Opera-Cache". With the update - before I deleted the I-HDD version, I lost my extensions and bookmarks. Again, I restored them. If you save your bookmarks to an HTML file, it's not a big deal. When you import, you'll get a folder with all your bookmarks. I drag and dropped them to my bookmarks bar. Right now, the bulk of my cache is on my I-HDD, but there are some files on my C-SDD. It's not that big, so I'll live with it. At least the 1,200 or so files will not be written to my SSD.

Some of my passwords were not saved, but I have a password file, so that was a minor inconvenience - but an inconvenience, none the less.

One thing that I noticed with Opera 50 is that the "add to bookmarks bar" button is gone. I can click the heart and specify to save to bookmarks bar, but that takes several clicks. I know I'm being picky, but it used to be there.

As much as I like Opera, why isn't the config file available. You know, the one that says, "You can muck up. Are you sure you want to edit this file?" - or something to that effect. I know that 99 and 44/100% of uses need to have ALL decisions made for them - the nanny state at it's best. There are some of us who "think" we know what we're doing and don't mind mucking up, upon occasion. I was only trying to do one simple thing - MOVE ALL THE OPERA CACHE TO ANOTHER DRIVE. Oh, well. We live and we learn.

You say you moved your profile to the HDD, and it then went back to the SSD?
I don't see why that would have happened, unless you somehow ran Opera without the switch.
Remember that if Opera is your default browser and you run it by clicking on a link in an e-mail say, it will not have the switch applied and will run with its default settings.

@davehawley - There is ZERO way I haven't checked the switch and it's always been redirecting. Now, to add fuel to the fire, I did a back-up after cleaning with CC. That was on the 8th of this month. ALL CACHE is off my SSD. The propagating back of the cache and the profile MOVED ON IT'S OWN, and now, it's behaving as I intended. There seems to be a lot of "I don't see why that would have happened, unless you somehow ran Opera without the switch" and "it's OK as it is". This is a good browser, for most things, it just has a mind of it's own. As to the updates, I've tried, twice, to stop it. I've renamed ALL the executables concerned with auto updates and removed the task from scheduler. Thank you for you input. I'm writing a book on all the "ghosts in the machine". I have detailed records. "I don't see why that would have happened, unless you somehow ran Opera without the switch." - but it did.

@davehawley - I missed commenting on your e-mail statement. I NEVER run email from the browser. If a site wants me to contact them with their "browser" thingie, I decline. I've been at this for a long, long, time. As far as Opera goes, I'm more than diligent. I HAVE FOLLOWED ALL the suggestions paying particular attention to the smallest things. I knew about the bookmarks, extensions, and passwords. I mentioned them so as to warn others in case they didn't think of them. Thank you for your time.

I only made that point because many people in the past have not realised that just putting a switch in on a shortcut does not mean that the program will always run in that mode. You are obviously well aware of that, so my apologies.
Why at least part of your profile seemed to revert to the original drive, despite the path specified in the switch, is a bit of a mystery. It could just be a bug of course!

@davehawley If the program is started by a link.. Then the flag/switch wont register.
