Can bookmarks from another browser be imported?

I already talked about how I prefered to import them from Chrome or a Chrome variant, I did it with the bookmarks already presorted, i dont remember the presorter extension i used, i named it in a previous thread, also the bookmarks file, the one that used to be the ADR file in opera, i replaced that with the one from chrome or the chrome variant, not sure which one of those things did the trick, but it did work, but whichever way importing from HTML is best

Heres copy pasted from what I've already posted on this subject, and you will need the Opera Bookmarks Manager Extension ----> Ok, I'm much closer now to consider Opera 20 as one of my more used browsers and maybe as default possibly, got the bookmarks figured out and I dont even need Tidy Bookmarks, The bookmarks on Opera now look just like the bookmarks on any of my other browsers, whether it's Ice Dragon, Dragon, Firefox, Srware Iron, the only thing is I access them from the bookmarks bar, No Bigge, I like the bookmarks bar for my most accessed websites, ScreenShots here------>
What I did was export the bookmarks as HTML from Dragon, A chrome derivitive browser, bookmarks were already sorted by the extension SuperSorter I use on Chrome style browsers, I think exporting bookmarks from a Chrome style browser is the way to go, I also copied the Bookmarks file from Dragon to replace Operas Bookmarks folder in AppData/Roaming, Not sure which of those did the trick, it was late last night when I did it, you can see from the screenshots I access bookmarks from the Bookmarks bar, same as I do in Dragon, they are all in order and cascade, the only extension i have for bookmarks installed is the bookmarks manager for importing bookmarks, works like a charm and I dont need any other bookmarks extensions Progress has been made

Sorry it took a few days to check back. Without the aid of extensions, which I try not to use, here is how to import bookmarks into Opera 20 from Chrome and Firefox:
CHROME BOOKMARKS
Find the Chrome bookmarks file on your computer, and simply copy it into the Opera folder on your computer.
Locations of each may differ according to your OS. On Windows 7 they are here:
Chrome Bookmarks: C:\Users<you_user_name>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default
Opera 20 Bookmarks: C:\Users<you_user_name>\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable
FIREFOX BOOKMARKS - Note: You need to have Opera 12.x installed for this procedure.

In Firefox, go to Bookmarks Manager > Import and Backup > Export Bookmarks to HTML...

In Opera 12, go to Manage Bookmarks > File > Import Firefox Bookmarks...

In Opera 20, click the Opera button in the top left of the browser, go to More Tools > Bookmark Importer

Wow, that seems pretty straightforward. On Chrome for sure. Thanks for such a concise statement of it. The one you haven't mentioned is IE, perhaps because of the different versions floating around. I have IE 11 on my computer (and there is an Import/Export tab there). It probably does the same as Firefox when it exports, saves to an html. So you would then import into Opera 12 Ã la your Firefox model.
Some people have complained about no ability to export from Opera 20. Wouldn't you think the process could go the other way too -- that you could simply move the Opera 20 bookmarks file into the Chrome bookmarks folder to replace what's there? Now Chrome can export bookmarks to HTML. So if people are worried about being trapped in Opera 20 and unable to export, they, it would seem, can move to Chrome, and from there, if they want, almost anywhere. Or am I missing something?

IE wasn't included because I don't use it, but I would imagine it's much like the Firefox method, as you said.
I just tried copying the Opera 20 bookmarks file over to the Chrome folder, and it does work, but it adds on to Chrome's existing bookmarks (instead of overwriting them), so you end up with both sets of bookmarks. Whether that's good or bad for anyone depends on their personal viewpoint.

That's because you already had some bookmarks in your Chrome. But some Opera 12 people are worried about moving to Opera 20, thinking there's no export function, and they might end up trapped there -- in Opera 20. All that would have to be done would be to download a Chrome browser with no bookmarks yet, or delete the ones there, and then make the transfer of the Opera 20 bookmarks. The point is that while Opera 20 could benefit from an export feature, it's not essential. Opera 20 bookmarks can easily be moved to Chrome, and from there (since it has an export feature) anywhere.

It is pretty much essential if anyone is to be persuaded to migrate to Opera 20. The average user is not willing to search for workarounds, even if they are simple. They expect to be able to import/export bookmarks with a bare minimum of effort using the GUI, not finding and copying files from Windows Explorer.
The other bookmark features like nicknames, or sorting by created order, etc., might be regarded is not essential, but import/export of bookmarks should be a high priority, and it's not something to leave to extension developers.

You're absolutely right, Pesala. I didn't choose the best word with "not essential". it ought to be a high priority -- the bookmarks manager so Opera 20 can easily handle imports of bookmarks from other browsers and exports to them. I mean, you would think Opera wants more Opera 20 users, and what you say would help encourage average users to move to Opera 20. On whether Opera should do it or a developer through an extension, I think the problem is that it's too important that it get done quickly than to wait for a developer extension. If we had right now a developer extension that did all of this, well, that would certainly help some. But we don't, at least not as far as I can see.
Still, it's nice to know in my mind, just for my use
that it's easy enough, even now, to move bookmarks from Opera to Chrome (which has a bookmarks export feature and can, thus, move its bookmarks almost anywhere), and from Chrome to Opera just by copying over bookmark files from one browser into a bookmarks folder in the other. All you need to know is the location. Also, it's nice to now because absent the import-export feature built into the browser, we still might have people asking in the forum how to do it right now. -

Now I know you did say you don't use extensions yourself, but for people who want to go into Opera 20 from Firefox, they seem to have two possible paths. And it would seem that the same is true for Internet Explorer (as I believe they can export bookmarks to HTML)

I think in Opera 20 (and I am not at my desktop right now to check) there is just a bookmarks file in the profile. So you substituted the Dragon file for the bookmarks file that was already in Opera? Sounds easy.

Or use a third party bookmark manager/sync service. Sync your old browser to the service, then sync your new browser.

it appears that linkman will do that, testing a few others. Like everyone here I am distressed at operas abandonment of Opera Link and am looking for alternatives.
