Today, I have only two VPN locations in Opera 48 - USA and Netherlands.
Are they the same as in O49 - 52?
The speed is acceptable, over 2mbit/s at least.

Yes.. VPN is totally hosed! If you look at the VPN selection, you will see "Americas", "Asia", and "Europe". Upon checking the IP address you will see that the IP address for "Amerika" is located in Ecuador... Now that is a brilliant decision on the part of the Opera Developers! You put yourself well beyond the machinations of President Trump but defeat the whole purpose of VPN accessibility.. Way to go.. NOT!

Opera is losing a lot of users because the VPN is crap and there's really only very little left making Opera stand from other browsers. Not to mention that V is looking into adding a VPN.

The last time I checked, Ecuador was located in South America. The term "Americas" is accurate in that it refers to a VPN server site largely serving users in both North and South America. The economics of where a VPN server is best sited go well beyond politics and borders.

On what do you base that? As I understand it, the economics of establishing a server network sufficient to support and maintain a built-in browser VPN network is beyond Vivaldi's current reach and not a high priority for them (if even being seriously considered at all) - at present, they are still trying to get reliable sync (which requires merely a single server site) deployed.

The VPN is pretty unusable for the last few days...very slow. Websites either load after 20-30 seconds, or fail to load with a timeout. I'm based in the Boston, MA area using Optimal Location (when I switch to Americas it's even worse - I think I'm connected to a European server).

@blackbird71 I think it was recently mentioned on V blog.

As to physical server locations of Opera VPN - Netherlands used to (at least) have the best internet privacy laws.

Why do they show various server locations to choose from when they all connect to servers in Europe - utter nonsense. Come on Opera get your act together.

@petepiper That information is not correct and even if it was, they never said that you will connect to a server in a specific place but that your connection would be seen as being from the chosen location.

VPN In Opera 48 was completely disabled - no location available now.
I think I'll stay at this old version anyway, it was less buggy than current 5x builds.
